Really curious about an 8 speed now. The more I think about it the more I think it's a possibility. For the gas engine anyway. The diesel is definitely keeping the 68 but 65 production didn't go up to cover the 66 loss like I thought it might be. Could be an 8 speed for gas, but FCA isn't building it.

Well, the cat is out of the bag. Looks like a couple upgrades that may be worthwhile. https://www.yahoo.com/news/2020-ram-hd- ... 00037.html

2020 Power Wagon - Spied

Post by Punishher7 » Mon Jan 14, 2019 1:25 am

Looks like the PW is getting the ZF 8sp with a rotary dial. That’ll be a sick setup. I miss that transmission in my 2014 1500 Sport. It was smoooooth.

Moving Hill Assist to that location was a smart move. And for anyone wondering, the ability to manually downshift/upshift is still there. It's on the steering wheel itself, it's laid about a bit differently, but it's similar in terms of position where the cruise functions are now on our trucks. It's the same setup that's on the 2020 1500's.

It's a tempting upgrade, but not tempting enough to commit to it. An 8-speed could be nice. But am I really getting more for the money??

Well, that will be an individual judgment call for sure.

I wonder what it's going to take to crack the code on the new locker control system? :geek:

Maybe it works perfect and won't even need a bypass.
So, to unlock the front only, do you push the rear lock button or the unlock button once? hmmm

You’d push the rear lock button. It’s the same setup it’s always been, just in the form of buttons versus a knob.

So....dumb question. Since the Wagon is getting the 8 speed, shouldn't that help it get a little better MPG's??

Looks like crawl Ratio is jumping to 50+ if it has the 8 speed.

That’s a change I really liked. It was the same change the Rubicons made. Much better design to shut the lockers down. Of course I have yet to use them in the PW. Lol

How are three buttons any different than a non-sequential three position knob?

The ZF fluid is $40/qt however they say it’s good for a hundred years. They even sealed the transmission so you don’t have to worry about it :).

Ya know I guess there really isn’t a big change. I just like the push buttons. Then the off button. All about what you’re used to I guess. Just a little different design. I like it. And I also like the new gear selector.

I don’t dislike it. It’s just a new interface on the same old system.

The TFL guys did not give it live but they mentioned it was a big jump since with the 8 speed they have a much lower first gear. Some good stuff for sure. Now about those tires....

Clickable link for Tapatalk

Still has 4.10's so with the new 8-speed it's going to have a better crawl ratio for sure.

I decided to do a 2012 (my truck) vs 2019 Power Wagon so I could focus on the differences. Other than a grill, hood, and bumper the lines are all the same (no shock here, we all know that). I know the interior is worlds better than my 2012 (if I had known then what I know now, I'd have waited for a 2013). The 6.4L Hemi with the 4.10 Gears and the 8spd Auto is a big improvement as well. I'm just not sure all of it adds up to a good reason to get rid of my 2012, especially when it has less than 56,000 miles on it. I like the upgrades, but not enough to drop a big chunk of change plus my truck just to have a new truck, especially when I know a new model is only a couple of years out with hopefully more power.

This design refresh appeals to me most as a future used truck buy. If/when the 2015 is too clapped out, there should be plenty of these used (whatever-gen, 4.75?) trucks on the market, most of them being babied street queens. The underpinnings being largely the same, all the armor and suspension upgrades on my 2015 would swap over to a truck that is four (or five or six) years newer with a better transmission and nicer interior.
