I still want a 4:1 transfer case or a better crawl ratio. I can barely hold my truck anymore in 1st gear low. Pretty disappointing.
That's because the ABS computer map changes for the range selection. Pull your ABS fuse and see how it feels.

This is the route I’m going when the time comes Boldadventures, might be worth a look for you. An atlas or stak aren’t really meant for vehicles our size

I will say, I agree with comments about the 6.4 feeling gutless or lethargic. The 5.7 in my 1500 felt very sporty and responsive. And it only had 3.92 gears.

The 6.4 in the PW works. But it feels like Ram designed the engine around the idea that a construction worker or a landscaper was just going to pull a trailer around town and move stuff too and from the job site in an urban environment. It's not exciting. It works. It has enough power to move stuff. And I can pass people on an incline. It feels like a work truck. Boring.

The 5.7 feels more like horse where the 6.4 is a mule.
It's the transmission programming, transmission ratios, and final drive ratios causing it to feel that way. The 6.4 is a significantly better engine and better suited for the application.

The transmission programming on mine was terrible. When they did the 5 recalls, reflashed everything it's like a different truck. I don't even feel shifts now, it will hold at 35mph in 3rd gear, and downshifts with just a light blip of the throttle. It was so bad with the factory tune.

Hold your truck? What are you referring to? I would think adding a lower gear in the case would make that even worse, but not exactly sure what you mean there.

Poor holding power isn’t to due with ABS, more to do with the torque converter wanting to pull you along. I do a lot of my slow downhill driving in neutral.

If you REALLY want to have fun, someone else let me know when you find that seldom-activated engine shutdown feature that kicks in when you’re in Drive but move backwards. That will fuck your day fast when you’re going up a climb on Metal Masher and let the truck roll back a few feet to get in a better spot and the safety shuts your engine and power brakes down

Shuts the motor off?! Damn. I know my truck will stay put on a hill until you give it some throttle again, but never had it shut off

Never heard of that, but if you are talking Widow Maker on Metal Masher, yeh that would be bad. That obsticle is insane now. Got out of it last time due to snow.

yikes.

if you want a good 4:1 T case, the Rubicon (241J) works really well. My second gen weighs about 7klb and has 42"S and has been beat. Broke every part. exploded the stock 231DHD. Have ran the 241J since 2003 with no issues. No brainer for me, I would replace it with another if I blow it up. Plus the stock shifter works!

Damn its hard to believe they actually stuck something in a Jeep that is stout enough for a full size.

Yeah. Its stout compared to the original 231 DHD, over twice as heavy. Recall the 2500 CTDs had 241 DHD cases which externally were the same size. The 241J is super cool. Fixed output, bolts to stock 46RE/47RE. 4:1. Stock Dodge shifter. install and forget. Don't get me wrong, Atlas/Stak are cool but for an oem part, it was awesome.

Seriously, you guys have no idea how much better these trucks are off-road & over obstacles with low gearing. There is considerably less stress put on the drivetrain components with super lo gears vs trying to power up or bump up & over obstacles. That's why Uni-Mogs freakin' ROCK! They have gearing around 350:1. That is what i will prob miss the most. Lo range, 1st gear, letting the truck drive itself while i concentrate on what line to take. Hoping the torque of the new mini-diesel will kinda be the same.

It would take you guys with newer PW's from 34.96152:1 --- to 52.972:1.

A 4:1 Lo range would take my truck from 78.016:1 --- to 114.7296:1

Yes, there are many times when 4Lo, 1st gear is just too damn low. But not to worry, just use 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or 5th gear Lo range, or 1st gear high range, which is 28.6824:1. Almost as low as some stock auto PW's.

I have to say, the 6.4 at least has enough torque to get me over anything with the current gearing. I even was able to wheel at high elevation in high range when the tuner crashed my truck and made low a limp mode. Not saying 4:1 would not be better though. I added it to 1996 Montero and god its amazing.

I will certainly miss some aspects of the PW. I think i have watched just about every ZR2 diesel video on youtube, & the torque at idle allows the driver to not have to rev it up, just lumber over stuff. Already got some mods in the back hallway for the new truck. Picked up new truck tonight. They already make 4.56's for the ZR2, but those that have them & lifted it & run 35's are saying they now get piss poor mpg, lol imagine that. For diesels, 3.73's seem to be the ticket stock. 4.10's or 4.56's if towing heavy or lifted with big tires & towing. Our new one has 3.42's in the axles, crazy right ? Crawl ratio on it is 37.767.

There was 1 guy who installed/had installed a gear vendor under drive unit in an auto PW, he friggin' LOVED it. Can't remember who it was. I think way back on DTalk forum.

So Ram has the big reveal tomorrow at the Detroit Auto Show. The Ram Facebook page has been full of teasers. We know what they look like on the outside, and we know they are getting the updated interior. What else should we expect? Will Ram be the first to break the 1,000lb torque barrier? Do we get a new gas V-8? Guess we will know soon.
