6.4 Burning Oil
6.4 Burning Oil
Anyone else have a 6.4 that burns oil? I have about 6k miles on my 2018 now and it's burning about half a quart every 2k miles. Not a lot but enough that I need to add some here and there. Dealership says it's not normal and they want to run a consumption test on it. I think Chrysler allows for 1 quart to be burned every 1k miles before doing anything about it. But the dealership is concerned because the motor is so new. Thoughts?

Re: 6.4 Burning Oil
That’s very early to burn that but technically that is not much consumption. Have you tried a heavier oil? 0W-40?

Re: 6.4 Burning Oil
Ive got somewhere around 23k on my ‘16, change the oil just about once a year at roughly 6000-8000 miles, and its never been a drop low that I can tell on the dipstick.
What oil are you using?

Re: 6.4 Burning Oil
Change my oil about every 8K, or when the dummy light reminds me. At 28K miles I never check it. Its odd how you can get a random engine that does this. Seems like every manufacturer has a few. Normal, I say its not, but some like BMW insist it is. Modern engines that are well put together should not use a drop. At 225K on my Nissan Titan I used none. My concern would be, how good an engine, how tight is it really in the long run? What damage will burning extra oil do to emissions, or add carbon build up?

Re: 6.4 Burning Oil
15k miles on my 18 since Dec'17 and 3 oil changes. hasnt burned any noticeable amount..
what kind of miles do you log, highway?
do you drive fast? slow? grandma and never pass 2500RPM?
or are you extremely aggressive with your throttle and brakes?
when did you purchase?

Assuming you've had this truck since bran new, how was it drive the first 500 miles or so?Lazarus wrote: ↑Tue Nov 27, 2018 6:00 pmAnyone else have a 6.4 that burns oil? ^ That is a bit excessive but I love it haha.
I drive moderately. Not like a granny but not like Ricky bobby either. 600 miles have been pulling a heavy load on this oil change. 60% highway miles, 30% off road, 10% city. I change it every 3k miles, it's about due for its second oil change so I'm gonna have Chrysler run the consumption test on it. I've talked to the 3 local dealerships here in Boise about it and they all seem a bit concerned. I worry I didn't get a good engine, and I plan on keeping this truck for quite awhile.

Re: 6.4 Burning Oil
I asked because the manual states that early in the life of the motor should include aggressive and varying use of throttle. To seat rings well it is important to subject motor to high throttle percentage and moderate rpm to force rings to seat well against bore. That’s not just the case with these motors but with many many motors when new.
Re: 6.4 Burning Oil
From manual: Drive moderately during the first 300 miles (500 km).
After the initial 60 miles (100 km), speeds up to 50 or
55 mph (80 or 90 km/h) are desirable.
While cruising, brief full-throttle acceleration within the
limits of local traffic laws contributes to a good break-in.
Wide-open throttle acceleration in low gear can be detrimental
and should be avoided.

Re: 6.4 Burning Oil
Yeah, I followed those exact instructions from the manual to a T when breaking in the motor.

Re: 6.4 Burning Oil
It's actually not excessive - I'm following the required oil change interval! (re-read the recommended oil change frequency in the manual - it's not just based on mileage )Lazarus wrote: ↑Wed Nov 28, 2018 10:25 pm^ That is a bit excessive but I love it haha.

In addition - I only use the PW when i need a truck with off-road traction - lifetime average speed is 19 mph. It's a hard life...

Re: 6.4 Burning Oil
If you watch the oil change gauge it actually calculates when to change the oil based upon mileage, using 4x4, speeds, and using tow haul mode. Its quite a good system.

Re: 6.4 Burning Oil
I want to say average oil temps and engine rpm are part of the equation, I believe this is what gm did in the early days of the ls motors in vettes and possibly f-body as well.

62k on mine.
Re: 6.4 Burning Oil
If I followed my oil change gauge that would be like 10k miles between oil changes and no way am I doing that even if Ram says it's ok.

Re: 6.4 Burning Oil
Change mine every 4500-5000, usually around 40-30% oil life on the info system.
Re: 6.4 Burning Oil
Actually more like 7,500-8,000. My math was off. It's rarely on the freeway, but not off road as much as yours is apparently.
