Engine fan

Post by Easttnrhino » Sun Nov 18, 2018 8:04 pm

Has anybody changed from the engine driven fan to a electric fan I have in past on other trucks with aftermarket parts good results. I read that that the half tons fans dc fans will work and are plug in can anyone verify. Thanks

There is a lengthy thread on the Ram Forum discussing using the electric fan out of a V6 in 5.7 Hemi trucks. I'm not sure if anyone ever tried to put one in a 6.4 nor am I sure if they use the same connectors. If you want to experiment please let us know how it goes.

Here is the E-Fan: https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.ph ... 7848&jsn=1

The e-fan will never pull the air of a mechanical fan, but for most uses that’s just fine. I would be very interested in seeing this. I’ve considered going electric on my 5.7.

Would be a nice mod for those using their PWs as submarines.

One of the thing I like about a electric fan is that at low engine rpm the fan is at its constant air movement and as low sky pointed out I have put a toggle switch under dash (out of site) on my past truck to kill the fan for deep water crossings. Not to mention no drag on the motor (bet gas mileage would double lol)

Still not sure what is driving this change. Trying to fix something that’s not broken?

I doubt the 6.4 would stay cool with a v6 fan, but as for electric vs engine fan, if the electric is sized properly I will take ever time, full air flow at low rock crawling speeds , no drag on engine (revs quicker, better mpg, quieter than some clutch fans) depending on how wired can let the fan run after engine off or kill for deep water.

So you're going to order the E-Fan and try it out?

My 5.7 has a secondary electric fan. Does the 6.4 not? I have found the secondary fan to be crazy effective. I cannot get engine temps above 219, pinned in second gear with 6,000lbs behind the truck.

The secondary fan is for the AC. The Ram V6 fan replaces the engine fan and the AC fan. In the 5.7 the E-Fan turns on whenever the AC is on or the temps reach 220 degrees. The 1/2 ton crowd reprograms the ECU to turn on the fan at lower temps.

Correct

I would not want single fan. That AC fan is a sweet backup.

My experience with bigger engines, it's hard to keep cool if towing or working them with just electric fans. I think about my 6.4 when I am towing and wrapped out at 5500 rpm, it's moving a lot of air. I don't know the exact airflow, but when I looked at it for my 8.1 Chevy, it was about 3-4x as much at 4800 rpm (effective redline) as you could do with a similar sized electric (off the shelf, at the time.)

We did one in a 454 powered crawler with a factory rad. Took an OEM puller (Windstar V6 which was one of the higher rated single fans at the time) and an aftermarket pusher just to keep it cool on the two tracks. (Was fine on trails.)

Agreed, for low speed, rock crawling, etc, they can work. I would say it was not uncommon when I used to wheel with people with swapped in electric fans that we would have to hotwire or replace solenoids during a trail but that might be the install quality, not the overall. I have never had that as an issue in a factory unit.

Definitely not for me. But YMMV. I work around a lot of equipment and ours are either engine driven or hydraulic driven.

My 2017 6.4 has only on fan and it is mechanical, can someone help me to the ram forum where they talk bout the swap, not having any luck finding. As ramv said I have been guilty of some of the wiring issues but on past factory e fans stuff not a problem that the reason this intrigued me. Thanks

I need to correct a wrong statement I made my 6.4 does have a e fan and mechanical fan I was looking for a pusher like the old days thanks to reloader help finding other forum and watching them I most likely will try it. But it will be a while surgery will have me out of commission for a long while. Plenty of time to read and dream thanks
