Spare Fuel

Post by ramv » Sun Oct 21, 2018 3:05 pm

Anyone doing anything clever with spare fuel? I am thinking something like a Rotopax mounted over the wheel well on the bed side?

My cheapo fuel containers break. I need something decent.

I use either a Jerry can or a couple VP fuel cans. Usually the VP cans. I keep them strapped down and have never had a problem. Rotopax are expensive for the small amount of fuel they hold, in my opinion.

I like VP. That's what I used to use racing.

If you figure out how to relocate the evap canister in front of your fuel tank titan makes a 52 gallon extended tank.

Yeah, I need a portable solution so I can fill generators/side by side. Etc. I just like to carry a few gallons of 91 octane so I am always prepared.

I am kind of thinking a 2 gallon Rotopax on each side behind the wheel well. I like that they can be locked. And only 3" wide. Shouldn't impede the box space at all? Plus could go to 3 gallons each if I was ok with the extra width.

I juat have a 5 gal walmart yellow jug in the front of my truck bed with one of those spills allover spouts nearby. My truck is diesel so the container is not as critical as with gasoline. 8-)
I do have a one gallon rotopax for gasoline on the back of my dirt bike.

You want the NATO or German Jerry Can style cans. Harder to find but worth it. I carry those even inside SUVs. The stupid US ones that are EPA compliant spill everywhere of course. Because the NATO style has a vent they are forbidden for sale in places like California.

You think it would fit if you just tossed the evap. No one needs that crap anyhow.

In Moab last year... i may or may not have jumped my truck on the dunes. My nice gas can spilt all over the place. I bought the NATO Spectre Jerry can and associated donkey dick off ebay. You can find 'em and they are plastic and industructable and won't leak, ever.

For this, the rotopax idea is a good one if you can stomach the expense and you’ll use them a lot.

For occasional use, a cheap gas can with a non-Cali pour spout will get it done. For more volume and more robust containers, plastic military fuel cans are the way to go.

Also known as a shaker siphon.

I pulled the valve out of mine and put it in a more flexible rubber hose, got tired of the clear vinyl hose having too much memory in the cold.

I don’t use the siphon much since I made a DIY pour spout for my cans. The pour spout empties the cans completely, and faster than the siphon. The transfer speed adds up when I’m doing multiple cans.

Well for $30 I ordered a VP 5 gallon. I jumped my Ranger a lot of times with it in the bed and never broke one. I still am working through a rotopax solution. I like the siphon. Probably need a couple of those.

VP cans are where it’s at. Cheap, aftermarket stuff for them, and they don’t scream ‘break into my truck, there’s an Overland Bound journal in my glove box, four heavily modified Glock 19’s in the center console, two flasks of Blue Label under the rear seat and a survival bag in the passenger footwell with all of today’s chic accessories’.
