AC Main Blend Door

Post by scoutpappa » Sat Oct 20, 2018 8:46 pm

Anyone had there AC blend door decide to close randomly when the truck has been running for a while? 2017 and honestly the last time I had this happen it was with my 2009 1500 and it was a recall/re-map that was the issue.

I take it with 55 views and no replies either no one has had this issue or it self fixed like in my situation. I was somewhat concerned as this happened on a day that I was running all of the rough gravel roads in one of the plant propers I deal with regularly.

On the 3G's. The blend doors broke. Hopefully on the newer ones. They fixed it.

It has happened to my truck too. The system just kind of gets confused. I thought it was a broken blend door like is common on 3rd gen trucks but the system reset and pow, cold AC again.

2nd gen it would do it but it was a vacuum issue. I added bigger vacuum reservoirs and check valves and addressed some other vacuum system issues. Oh, and regeared so the truck wasn't at full throttle all the time. (Full throttle it would go to defrost.)

I even pulled the glove box when I stopped for gas and plucked the blend door motor and harness. Guess being an EE means I still think a swift kick or punch will fix most electrical issues. :box:

I'm pretty sure mine on my 2015 acts up from time to time as the AC just goes moderate cold to luke warm at infrequent random times.

During warm weather. No sounds. When it gets cold. When I first start up. Mine sounds like someone is opening a lid to a coffin.

Kinda the opposite being in Houston. AC is active most of the year for us. I think this truck (2017) acts the same as my 2009 insofar as the main blend door closes when you shut down and opens when you start up and then adjusts when it calcs the differential in temp (so ambient vs. call). It only concerned me as this happened while operating for quite a while as opposed to not opening when I started which is what happened with the 2009. Also when this happened with the 2009 the AC was escaping down. In this truck the door was completely shut meaning I had no flow. Thankfully it is getting to be winter and it was only 82 ish.

Do you have a cabin filter? Mine was pretty dirty and I was thinking there may be a resistance factor.

Just changed it and went with the K&N cabin filter so I could just clean it out. I do quite a lot of dirt roads so I'll check that. These are not like the intake air filters so I wanted an option that I could clean whenever, but good point on checking it.

On my 2006, I had a warranty replacement for my blend door, well actually, the whole guts, in 2010. It's not like they can just reach down and replace the door or actuator, like in a older Grand Cherokee I had. And, I just got a new evaporator and heater core replaced a month ago. Yea, not sure why I did that!

I might be looking at a evaporator and heater core too. When I was at the OBX beginning of the month. My A/C was blowing warm air. Took it in and had the system recharged. It had hardly any refridge left in it.

What sux is when you recharge it, and the leak is actually in the evaporator, the refrigerant then leaks out inside the cab. It's not too healthy. Since I'm keeping the truck, I figured I would get it fixed. LOL
