Max tire size for chains

Post by Lazarus » Mon Oct 15, 2018 12:25 pm

I'm thinking of getting rid of my stock duratracs on my 2018 after reading all the terrible things about them on this forum. I think I will probably go with the KO2's. I have some pretty chunky tire chains for my truck that I still want to be able to use without any modifications to the truck. What is the biggest tire size I can get away with without any rubbing? I apologize for this post as I know it has been beaten to death already, but I haven't seen anything about people using tire chains and still having clearance. I feel like the stock 33's are just a bit small on these trucks.

I went with a 285/75/17 when the stock BFG's died on my truck, which basically are a 34x11.50. I can fit chains on the front and back in that size on my 2012. The newer trucks with the radius arms might be different.

35x12.50r17 Toyos with chains will rub on the radius arm and sway bar, but not too bad. Just don't turn full lock.

I was thinking of picking up some of the Security Chain Company SZ486's. If I recall, folks on here said that the low profile of these works well on most rigs/tires, even with the 35s and 37s in 12.50 width, etc. Granted, they're not very aggressive compared to a hefty v-bar style, etc. But might be enough for some winter-time assistance without spontaneously clearancing the fender wells, etc :D

The SZ are good, easy to put on. I have tried them with 315/70R BFGs with no rub.

Keep the stock 33s for winter driving; they may not hold up well off-road but they are the best winter tire for trucks or Jeeps that I’ve ever had, and I grew up in Alaska and live here now.

I don't really mind the duratracs. I had them on my 05 before I got the 18 and really liked them. The soft sidewall makes me nervous though. And reading everyone's posts about how bad they are haha. Do 35's dog the truck at all? Thinking 34's might be better when I do upgrade.

Maybe try the 315/70/17 duratracs. They probly only measure 34”, and maybe they are better than the stock ones.

I have 23k on my stock duratracs now and havnt had one single issue. I run the psi in the high teens to low 20s when aired down, and 60-65 psi when driving on the road. But yea, everyone elses horror stories makes me wanna not get them again lol.

I think I'll be keeping my stock tires. The most any shop will give me on trade for my stock tires (with 3,500 miles on them) is $400, and nobody wants to buy things on Craigslist where I'm from. Hopefully I'll have no issues with the duratracs...

$400 isn’t too bad but normally the Jeep guys are all about them...surprised you’re having trouble

If there are any Jeeper Facebook groups in your area, try selling them there. 33” duratracs for 17” wheels are a popular size for that crowd. It’s the equivalent to putting 35s on a stock Wagon.
