Towing Question

Post by Lazarus » Mon Oct 15, 2018 11:58 am

Took my 2018 pw elk hunting this past weekend with 3 horses and a heavy trailer. My 2005 was fine with the leaf springs, but this new one with the coils on the rear got its ass eaten. Any suggestions on what to use to stiffen up my rear suspension? Curious if anyone is using the timbrens and what their thoughts are on them. Or air bags.

Airlift Ultimate 5000 Airbags with Daystar cradles. There are two different installation writeups if you look for them.

I have the firestone airbags, day star cradles and airlift controller.
So far so good. Can easily level the truck or even raise the rear enough for some rake.

Normally i wouldn't say anything but before you choose look at the Firestone and Airlift upper bracketry. Airlift is a flatter install so you loose less articulation. The firestone is unnecessarily thick and you loose and inch or two. Firestone doesn't support their bags in Daystar cradles anymore. And the Airlift has an internal jounce bumper and are rated for 0 PSI. Firestone needs 5 PSI minimum so you really need onboard air. Just my opinion, ymmv.

What about the timbren rubber spacers? Seems like I could take those off in 10 mins for off road and install just as quick for when I need to tow.

I tried that. Sucked. Easier to air up and down and you hit them if you leave them on and it's harsh. I gave them away.

I second this setup. It's what I have and it works great.

Timbrens are good with really soft suspension if you are trying to stiffen it up. These trucks are stiff enough empty, I prefer the airbags. The Airlift work awesome.

I have Zak’s previous timbrens. They were excellent when I had a few thousand pounds in the bed. I’ve only used them one time. They rebound a lot if the shocks aren’t dialed in!!
