Thuren Test Drive

Post by ramv » Sun Oct 07, 2018 8:01 pm

Did about 150 miles today. Over half dirt.

This with the Thuren PW 2.5" King kit. stage 3 valving. Front Boogie Bumps BFGs at 46 psi front/39 psi rear
First dirt roads had some snow. Lots of elevation gain. Narrow, tight. Washboard. Faster was better. Didn't hop but definitely knew you were on washboard. A little harsh.

Next was a downhill section, smooth with big erosion berms. Started to push. Truck never bounced. Never pitched. Never kicked. Went faster and faster. Finally hit one a little hard. Front soaked it up. Boogie bump rocks. Used most of the shock travel. Rear was a little harsh, guessing I hit the bump stops in the Airlift Ultimate bags. However, stayed straight. Stopped due to the smell of gas (my spare gas can split on the impact...)

On to some more technical trails. Truck did well, always enjoy the lockers.

Goal was to get from the end of the trail back to town in 2 hours. Made it in 1:45. Suspension did great going fast. Low range climbing out of the trail, on hard dirt roads, wen to 4wd Hi with 2 Lo kit engaged so I could disable the ESC and unlock the sway bar below 18 mph.

Good day!

Doing it over, I would probably do Stage 2 but I haven't towed or hauled with it, and I'm guessing the stiffer valving will help up with 3000 lbs...

A couple points to consider.

your tire pressures are way high for dirt time. Lower them down and the washboard compliance will be substantially better.

Kings will break in just like an engine or gears or anything else mechanical. Give them about 5k miles before you make any decisions about valving. They will wear in and smooth out a bit. The harder you run them the quicker they’ll settle in.

Awesome truck btw and congratulations on the new suspension!

Your tire pressures are too high for dirt time. Hell, that's high for highway time on 37's IMO.

Dial the pressure down a bit and go faster... lol. I sometimes think stage 2 would be softer on the small shit than stage 3 but it really evens out when you get the pressure low. At that point your riding on your shocks most of the time and using them for big hits, the springs are mostly used for droop, and sidewalls are used to soak up the small shit. So if they are too firm its like riding on a washboard on some small gravel.

I do A LOT of washboard with the Kings. But my setup is tuned a bit more, when I requested the stage 3 I spent a bunch of detail explaining what annoyed me about little hits and washboard.

Softer pressures help a lot. It seems silly to air down on a dirt road, but it will help greatly. Don't need crawling pressures. But 38/32 should make a huge difference with the Kings.

Over 40 PSI and you're going to get more feedback.

I went to 35/30 which was 33/28 super cold in the morning on washboards and I'd do 40mph and be fine.

Cool. It's a lot better on the road as it's broken in some and I am 43/37 than when I was 65/65.

Guessing 35/30 would be perfect.

I just dropped my pressures to 48 front and 43 rear for DD. With all of the suspension work people are doing with the 4g trucks what are you doing with the 5th shock? I was thinking about what I want to do in the near future but I haven't found a post yet that deals with the shock associated with the rear end for axle hop.
