Re: 2018 Power Wagon Brake Issues
Still thinking it is overkill (for a non-race truck)
I would want to prove that simply installing EBC Orange or Yellow pads all around for less than $600 wouldn't be more than adequate to kick the ABS on - on the pavement (on an unloaded truck).

Re: 2018 Power Wagon Brake Issues
I have the Yellowstuff pads on my PW and GC. You will notice a difference with them.
If getting rotors. Stay away from drilled rotors. They like to crack at the drilled hole. Slots are ok.

Re: 2018 Power Wagon Brake Issues
haha just swapping rotors and pads on the hellcat was going to be over $4k.. big brakes, means big money...literally why i had to sell it. rotors where trashed.
i will gladly swap the rotors and pads for high performance when the time comes...but im not underwhelmed by the performance of stock on 35s.
maybe with 37s, bumpers, sliders, and overland gear i would be looking for more...

I have had no issues with my brakes and 37's. The truck stops just fine.

Re: 2018 Power Wagon Brake Issues
When I needed new brakes a month or so ago, I purchased the autozone duralast high carbon, gold rotors and duralast max pads . The stock rotors were fine at 80k miles which was surprising but I replaced them. The brake parts are the same brakes as a stock 2500 designed to stop 30k lb loads repeatedly.
They stop much better than the original rotors and pads.

I have ssbc 2 piston calipers on my 99 1500 and they do work great. Had them for about 12-13 years. Never had a problem. Just grease the slides once a year. Big improvement for that truck.

Tried mine out last night. In reverse, low range. Hard to stop. But that’s a lot of torque. Plus you’ve got the elevated idle in low range. I’m sure they are all the same.

3rd Gen here but i used the one click Z-36 package from PowerStop. VERY happy with the increased stopping power while towing the camper. It's like Murphy's Law, when you are towing & at speed, everyone wants to pull right out in front of you at the last second.
Yesterday, I even proved it to my wife...not towing though. Coming up on a 4 way intersection with a 2 way stop @ 55 mph, & headlights on. 1/2 mile away, car pulls up to stop sign & stops. There was no other traffic coming from any other direction, just us. I counted out loud to one-thousand-twelve, we were only about 150' from intersection & they pulled right out in front of us.......... People are AWESOME !!!!

Re: 2018 Power Wagon Brake Issues
My 2010 would give you a head rush stopping with 37's no matter what 2hi, 4hi, 4lo... Plus, I'm pretty sure, even the new ones disable abs in 4lo. Steep hill, 4lo, takes a lot of brake no matter what in that circumstance.

Re: 2018 Power Wagon Brake Issues
A couple days ago, 4low in reverse backing down a short 6% grade. brake bottomed all the way out and the truck just kept moving backward like no brakes were being applied. Popped to neutral and the brakes caught. Put back in reverse and same thing. So weird haha. oh well at this point, I guess that's just how it is.

That's the ole PW just trying to keep on going, like pulling the reins on a stubborn mule, will go and keep on trying. Hahaha

Re: 2018 Power Wagon Brake Issues
The lowest gear we have in the 66-RFE is Reverse 4.44:1
Low range - down hill - reverse - the brakes don't have a chance!
Rev 4.44
1st 3.23
2nd 1.84
3rd 1.41
4th 1.00 direct drive
5th 0.82 overdrive
6th 0.62 overdrive

Re: 2018 Power Wagon Brake Issues
Honestly this should be a warning. I was backing up on an obstacle in Moab in 4LO in reverse down a hill and the truck... would... not... stop... i had to throw it in neutral to stop it. Maybe we should mention this in PWiM next time because it caught me off guard...

Re: 2018 Power Wagon Brake Issues
And then add on the Low-range high idle mapping... the 6.4's actually generate some torque at high idle rpm's - but it's only an increase of 100 RPM up to 750 RPM...TankerZak wrote: ↑Thu Oct 04, 2018 10:53 amHonestly this should be a warning. I wonder if this has something to do with the programming of the hill descend control?

Re: 2018 Power Wagon Brake Issues
My 18' was pretty bad when I first bought it. Almost to the floor on a panic stop. Now at 21,000km (15,000miles) it's better. Not perfect but better. Now they squeal most of the time.

Re: 2018 Power Wagon Brake Issues
Imagine how much better the new PW's would be off road and towing, and how much less you would use your brakes off road, if you only had 1 overdrive & lower & better gear ratios in the auto trans. Worse mpg though. C.A.F.E. is killing off road vehicles.

Re: 2018 Power Wagon Brake Issues
I do understand your point.
But I suspect more than 90% of all Power Wagon miles are on the highway and not off road where the brakes are adequate and the gear ratios are fairly optimal. I personally would hate to give up the 17mpg unloaded highway fuel mileage that i enjoy.
There are lots of trade-offs and compromises that have been made with the Power Wagon design. Compromises between off-road capability, payload, and highway use and even cost. The closer Fiat gets to the optimal compromise, the more Power Wagons they will sell. Power Wagon sales have been increasing year-over-year, and that is $$$$$ feedback to Fiat to keep compromising!
Again, I do understand your point.

Re: 2018 Power Wagon Brake Issues
I often think to myself how fun the truck would be with 4.88s or even 5.13s but then my practical side says "it tows 8000lbs fine with 37s and OEM 4.10s and gets decent mileage". Plus, the cost of re gearing can go along way to improving the suspension.
