Re: New Rear Bumper?
Damn it! I really want Expedition One to get their act together because that is the only bumper I've seen that really solves the issue of me not wanting a 37" spare taking up my bed space. One of the main reasons I'm still holding off on getting 37s and may give in and get 35s.

Aside from obvious low volume sales, price, and worse departure angle, does anyone know why we don’t see more of theses for rams? I’ll take a loss on clearance for winch and tire carrier...it’s based on a Runel design, buck stop bought them. They say they offer them for rams.

I have a distrust for tire carriers on our trucks. I think the user needs to take a hard look at how they use their truck. Because the tire carrier is almost exclusively used on tires 37” or bigger, and how easy it is to really romp on these trucks, it’s just sooo easy to rip them off right at the stem.

They do if you request it. I’m going to ask for a quote. 37” tire is taking up too much room and I need towing capacity (hitchgate is out). It’s a Runel, they have lots of rear mounted ram winch bumpers.olyelr wrote:Those dont have a provision for a winch... do they?laramieskibum wrote: ↑Sun Jan 27, 2019 2:55 pmAside from obvious low volume sales, price, and worse departure angle, does anyone know why we don’t see more of theses for rams? Damn this thread took a hard turn, I'm looking at bumpers and all of a sudden folks gotta have back up sensors? All the electronic bullshit is getting ridiculous. Go buy a car with plastic covers for a "bumper" and sell the truck.

Re: New Rear Bumper?
So, Devil's advocate. If a rear bumper isn't for improved appearance, and has no winch mount. What is it for? My second gen stock bumper was more than adequate until I took the bed off. On this truck, I hate the chrome, and I need a winch mount. Who cares if I crush the ugly chrome bumper as long as it doesn't fold into the bed. And frankly, I have got hung up on a corner with the rear tires off the ground and it didn't move, just some solid dents into it. So it seems ok?
On my Avalanche 2500 I crushed the plastic one multiple times, it was pretty much destroyed. But didn't seem to impact function?

Tired of the spare taking up bed space. I want a swing outs for the spare tire and possibly fuel cans.

Re: New Rear Bumper?
I see swingout carriers taken so lightly on these trucks. Do not take them as a cure-all. Guys running swingouts on these trucks are running 37” or larger tires, and with how capable these trucks are, especially with the bolt on suspension options, you could shear the swingout carrier off in a heartbeat. There is not a good mounting method to put a swingout on these trucks without some serious time spent figuring it out. Frame spacing and tail light to tailgate location do not make it easy. I do not think swingout carriers are the golden solution they look like on the surface in this application.

Re: New Rear Bumper?
I agree it needs to be well thought out. I have seen swingouts, tire mounts and entire bumpers laying on the ground or bouncing down the highway. It is one of the reasons I have never home brewed one or had a local shop build one up. There has to be a way to do it and do it right though don't you think? I had my own all planned out then chickened out over worrying about losing a 37 off the back going down the interstate. Double shear mounts and very short arms for the swingouts, etc, etc.DamageWagon wrote: ↑Sat Feb 16, 2019 7:50 pmI see swingout carriers taken so lightly on these trucks. I would trust Thuren to think it through and not just add swing outs as an afterthought since they are into the gofast stuff.

Re: New Rear Bumper?
I also like the swing out with tire and say hi lift mount to high clearance bumper but have same concerns, one of my thoughts was take the tailgate off and mount the tire to the swing out on the cab side and let the tire rest on the bed to help support the weight and it also helps to keep the truck from getting any longer.
Enjoying beautiful east TN

I do get the need/want for the tire carrier. Doesn't work for my applicaiton.
My point is, the bumper needs improve functionality, not just be a steel bar that's stronger than stock. Backup sensors, tag mount/lights, trailer plug can't just go away.

Re: New Rear Bumper?
The problems with geometry of a swingout on our trucks comes from the tire. If you have a 35” or smaller you don’t need to relocate the spare tire. So a bumper tire carrier is only for 37-40” tires. If you set a tire of that size on your bumper, you can see that in order to not have the tire itself kill your departure angle (ripping it off coming down a rock ledge would suck) you have to put the tire pretty high up. The tire ends up so high that it blocks part of your rear view. You can’t really keep it short and stubby in any way.
You could find some ways to make it work well and maybe someone will. I think a better solution exists.
