Max tire size

Post by HeavyDuty » Fri Aug 31, 2018 4:49 pm

First off I want to apologize for a topic I’m sure has been beat to death. I woke up to a flat front tire. Took it in to get fixed and there is a hole in the sidewall that is unrepairable. 15k Km. You can’t even see the hole. Anyways I’ve heard nothing good about these duratracs. 90% of my driving is off-road. So I might price out 4 new ones. I need reliability.
My question is what is the max size that will fit without any rubbing or mods. On the stock wheels.
Thanks in advance.

I have a 2016 Laramie with GY Duratrac 35/12.50r17 E rated on stock wheels and there is no rub. I can even fit my tire chains. I think both the Duratrac & BFG's run smaller than their indicated size and are more like 34's when they are new. I believe some of the manufacturers are actually 35" like maybe Toyo? I have a friend with 35" Coopers and I think he has a little rub at full lock. Maybe others will have more info but look at the manufacturers actual overall dimension and if it is 34.5 or less, no problem for me. 12.5 or less they shouldn't rub. And mine is tight, but I was able to get it up in the stock spare location at street pressure. If they were any bigger I don't think I could have got the spare up under the bed. You really need to consider a matching size spare. I also didn't really notice any power loss or braking issues with 35's. Hope that helps.

I know many people here don't like the BFG KO2 but I have them in a 35/12.50r17 and I have been extremely happy. It was amazing how much quieter it was immediately after installation as well as less vibration (could never get the Duratracs balanced). I had to air down my spare to get it in there and once aired up it is a tight fit. Great to know my spare matches and doesn't take up the bed space. I lost a little mileage, maybe 1 MPG. I may try the Toyo Ridge Grappler next time since so many people are having trouble with BFGs (my buddy got a recall notice in the mail for certain sizes-Not the 35"). Hope this helps!

35s. What I’ve seen is 37 toyos on stock wheels will rub a bit. Parts of the suspension gets a bit polished, noting really major.

15K on Duratrash is about max. I bought 35 Inch BFG KM3s and they really run small, no rubbing and they work great. 37s dont seem to take much work to fit, however things like gearing will come into play.

I ran 35 on stock for a while (now 37) I did not do anything about speedo correction thought I was fine got the aev procal because I read the 37 would definitely need the truck recalibrate to drive right. It came before the tires so I installed with the 35, wow wished I had done sooner.

So what did the Ave procal do for that. Just to dial in the tire size so it can update the speedo? Or does it update shift points and so on?

It corrects for the tire size, my speedo was off before but I was okay with that, you are correct on the shifting I never drove my truck with the factory 33 so I just thought the trans was not to my liking. Used the procal and trans is so much better(till this last recall) speedo now correct so many sensors are reading tire speed and if the size is off then the speed is off.

My AV Procal has an Arrow through it. Just like my first Warn wireless remote it did not work. So had to send them a picture of an arrow through it while I wait on a replacement. Not having luck with mods! Also your gas mileage is scary looking with out re-calibration.

Can you post a photo or two of your truck on 35in KM3s? I’m in between those and the Toyo MT at the moment.

So far great. Better traction, better ride. Slightly more noise. But mostly it boils down to not stressing out about flats. Will take it for a quick loop around Silverton this weekend and see how they do more off-road. Honestly its not real impartial as I have used BFG AT or MT my entire life.

Good to hear as I just slapped a set on mine as well. I have the KM2's on my Scout in the 33 x 15 pizza cutter variety so I'm expecting the same traction and ride (apples to oranges though as the 33's are C rated). On a positive note Discount gave me $75/ea. on trade in on the Duratracks with 20K on them so I was able to get out with the warranty for the same price as the online quote. Actually a few dollars cheaper.
