Rear Shock Question

Post by vanished » Mon Apr 30, 2018 7:03 am

What Bilstein's do we have - 4600 or 5100? Does anyone have the part number for the rear?
Trying to figure out what to order, as it doesn't appear entirely clear for our trucks...
2015 MY, wasn't sure if they changed them at the 14+ update...
Or if anyone has any stock takeoffs laying around? :D
Found a puddle (ok, a few drops on my driveway) of oil under my right rear shock yesterday...
23k miles and two weeks out of warranty...
Thanks!

With all the leaking issues I have heard with these shocks, I dont think I would be replacing them with the same thing.

Perfect time for the Thuren Overland upgrade https://www.thurenfabrication.com/produ ... ystem.html

If that is not in the budget or desires, maybe just snag his white body shocks or the King IFP shocks. He dosnt recommend them without his springs, but I cant imagine they would be all that bad with the stock springs.

And no warranty at 23k?! Ouch!!!!

Don’s Overland shocks are a really good option, very budget friendly. I’d do all 4 and enjoy the noticeable upgrade. Or fall into temptation and order Kings and put a fat smile on your face

When I killed my first set of OEM fronts, I let the dealership replace them with OEM units under warranty. No way in heck I'd pay out of my own pocket to put the same set of Bils back on the truck.

4600's/5100's are mechanically the same with a different finish and valving. PW shocks are a custom tuned version of the same shock. Bilstein's are leaky I've had multiple versions from 4600's to 7100's and they all leaked eventually.

In my option a 2" shock are to small for the PW no matter who makes them, if at all possible, save your pennies and get a set of 2.5 Kings.

Hey, come-on, you're vanished...if anyone can pull it off, you can. Tell the wife this is cheap insurance to insure against turning the PW into a Z71 style off-roader.

Tell her it's for safety. The handling on these junk Bilsteins is unpredictable, and they may fail AT ANY TIME. Think of the children, Vanished.

I would not say Bilstein's are junk, I think that's' overstating the case. Toyota, GM, Jeep, Dodge, RAM all have their performance shocks made by Bilstein.

They are fairly high pressure and can blow seals. However I have removed OEM Bilstein's off a 1998 Grand Cherokee within the last year that had all the oil and pressure in them I'd say that's pretty good!

If you want to cut costs just order a replacement rear shock from Mopar. I've been using Rancho Mopar Parts they have the deepest discounts on OEM parts and 2015 have rear PW shocks for 34% off MSRP PN# 68233921AD or about $152.90 each + shipping/tax

So is that still an OEM Bilstein, or a Rancho?

Thanks Coder, that's what I was looking for...

Although at $160 a piece, the king 2.0 isn't 'too' much more... But by the time I do front and rear and convince myself the stock springs will be fine... Well - I guess a $320 fix is cheaper...

Oh and thanks Tony - I already have a complex going on with this truck as it's only seen minimal off road compared to my first two... Heck my GMC was in the woods more!

$160 ea for OEM, $245 ea for Kings - but I would do just rears if OEM, but Kings would go all the way around..

The King 2.0’s are Cadillac shocks, not for heavy off-roading but more for really comfy street and washboard roads. Or if you want to throw stock-ish shocks back on I’d just grab some Thuren Overlands, about $145 per pair and a very good all-round shock for these trucks, better than factory

I like the 'stockish' approach... But will they sell them alone?

"Our rear shocks work with our rear coils ONLY, and our rear coil kit must use OUR shocks. More details on the coil spring page."

I admit I don't push my truck much but not sure if the suspension is truly that sensitive..

For whatever it is worth I believe Thuren also indicates that his overland shocks are to only be used with his coils, same with the king 2.0s. Perhaps the valving is generic enough for the oem rear coils.

My understanding is it’s not so much about valving as length. Stock gas and diesel trucks have shorter coil free heights than power wagons or his own lift springs. You don’t want coil springs popping out on the trail as you articulate because your shocks are “too long”

Yes. A simple test while installing them will let you know if there is indeed an issue with the PW coils being to short. If so, this could be remedies with some limiting straps.

But honestly, I am pretty sure the sway bars prevent even the OEM shocks from becoming completely extended. If not, it is very close.

Since installing my front 1.5" coils and using the oem shocks up front I believe i'm hitting their max extended length during axle droop after hitting anything mildly aggressive (6" bumps/ruts, aggressive speed bumps square on, etc.). I got thunk/pop sound when it happens and all other suspects have been ruled out. I've been meaning to get the compressed and extended measurements of the front oem bilsteins for some time but haven't had the time seeing as how the truck spends so much time pulling a lawnmower trailer and our boat this time of year until well in to december (for boat anyway). I may solve it for the time being with a set of overlands until I can pony up for real shocks or may run 2.0 reservoir fox shocks which are about the same cost as the king 2.0s. Not in any hurry. Sorry for the partial derail.

If Bilsteins are junk how do Ranchos rank? Less than junk?
