Fender Flares

Post by Chromolykid » Tue Feb 13, 2018 10:52 am

How many of you have tried aftermarket fender flares? I’ve had 6 of mine replaced on Furiosa under warranty because the tape lets go and they warp away from the truck, I’m tired of dealing with it and want to try something else.

I don’t see too many options out there, Bushwackers are ridiculously priced and so are AEV flares. I’ve read on other forums that guys have good success with eBay flares at a fraction of the price, some saying they’re the exact same as Bushwackers (even have the same part number molded on them). Any truth to that?

Any pictures and details of what model flare you have or how well they installed would be appreciated.

I have had those flares in my watchlist on ebay forever. If it's like a lot of products that are made in China, they could be the same. One of the big issues with Chinese manufacturing is a company will have a factory make stuff, and then on the side, that same factory will sell out the back door the same product on ebay or alibaba. And direct ship from China. I've seen this with a few name brand aftermarket companies, where the Chinese ebay version is the SAME product. Same markings and everything at a fraction of the cost.

So strong possibility in my mind that those rumors are correct. I don't have personal experience with them, but I'd believe it.

Interested as well... Mine do the same thing, and I keep having to put new tape on. I don't want anything way wider either... Those AEV cutout flares that will stuff bigger tires do look interesting, but for the price, no thank you!

ChromolyKid, it's too damned hot in California if your truck is melting all the time.

Funny you say that! I legitimately believe the dark color is mostly to blame for all my Rambox and fender flare issues. Should’ve bought white.

Agreed, my aftermarket grill was an eBay special and it’s identical to a much “higher end” grill that runs over $1,000 by the time an emblem is added on. Mine was $120. These flares I’m looking at are only about $150 for a set of 4, I guess I’ll give them a shot and report back.

The color of the plastic matters more than the color of the truck. Have you tried buying your own double sided tape? My tape has been long gone but I never replace it because I pull my fenders all the time, I just let the screws hold the flares

With my old grey/silver car in Albuquerque the damn thing used to get super hot, like 160 can't touch bare metal. White trucks and cars don't get nearly that hot. They don't stay cool, but you are not going to burn yourself on the seat belts.

What tape are you guys using? I have a flare letting go but it's from pulling the fender liner.

I have the Bushwacker flairs. Had them on since '08. Have one rear flair superglued together after getting hit with a tree stump. The flairs are not painted. They show some fading. I use Mother's Back to Black and they shine again. When I bought mine. They was just over $400 for front and rear.

Do they come in black?

These are the ones I’m looking at, I’m a fan of the textured look. I think the standard black makes the wheel well look bigger and the tire smaller, I’m thinking these will break up the dark colors a little bit. I don’t like painted flares personally.

My only issue is they say “some drilling required” but I’m waiting on a reply to see if that means drilling the flare or the truck. I’m not too keen on drilling holes in my truck to save a few bucks.

So drilling the plastic liner, not the flare itself? I assumed they used the factory mounting holes.

I figure they should stick out about another inch from the factory flares. Any plans to put yours on soon?

These are also very tempting, but ads with hardly any pictures worry me. I like the smooth look but they may stick out a bit further than what I’m looking for: https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre ... 2526799139

Some holes may not line up so you drill your plastic liner and put a nut to hold it.

I may do mine by end of the month... just realized it may stick out too far.. i may go for the textured if it does.. will post pics when I'm done

I vote black, especially if you have the two-tone black stripe on the bottom. For some reason color-matched flares always look funny to me, I like a little contrast.
