Painting rock sliders

Post by DocPaulo » Wed Jan 31, 2018 10:51 pm

I have my WK sliders on order.. ive decided to go the rustoleum hammered route for paint...

Anybody done this? Did you use primer before the paint or directly to metal...

Any tips or other recommendations?

Use a self etching primer first. Do several light coats to get the best results.

I used a self etching primer like colibri suggested, then regular rustoleum paint on top. It’s held up fine on the parts that don’t hit stuff. I guess dropping off a step-ledge in Moab at 15mph and hanging the truck on the sliders might have knicked the paint, and the spot I step into the truck every day is nicely polished bare steel, but otherwise it’s about 80% still there!

I had mine Powder Coated, like I put in my most recent video, it won't last if you use your truck. Good call on painting.

I sanded mine, used a rust inhibitor and then used a self-etching primer. Afterwards I painted them with Eastwood Two-Part paint in Rat Rod Satin Black. Oh man do I love the look.

It turned out fantastic, and I painted my bumper and rack the same color.

Very nice... did one can of the 2 part spray cover both sliders and bumper? May want to do it that way

I put on a lot of coats. I think 1 and a half can did the sliders. The bumper actually took a surprisingly lot more. But I probably put like 5-8 coats on now that I think about it. Probably went over-kill, considering I scratched it all up already, lol.

I figure now though, I'm just going to touch up and fresh coat from time to time.

I double checked my orders. I bought 6 cans total. And one can is staring at me here on the shelf in my garage unused. So 1 1/2 on the sliders plus 3 on the bumper and rack seems pretty decent. Round takes less. It was the flat surface I felt was blowing through it.

I really love the color. I do wonder if I was suppose to use a satin clear but who cares. It works.

We blasted mine then did a couple of coats of POR 15 then finish coated them. They are holding up really well.

Do good prep and use good primer/base coat and you will be happy with the results.

POR-15 will hold up a LOOONG time. I painted the frame on my C3 Corvette with that stuff. It also stayed on my hands for an entire month no matter how much mineral spirits I used. That stuff is nasty. Use gloves if you work with it. If you get it on something, it's never coming off. LOL

Eastwood.com since that's pretty much the only online source I know for that stuff. Also where I got my POR-15. You ever find a better deal, let me know.

It is crazy stuff for sure. It has held up extremely well to the sliders being blasted with salt all winter long up here. We top coated them with bed liner to cover up the POR 15 and give them some traction/texture. So far I couldn't be happier.

I think it was Line X but I can't remember for sure. It was whatever my buddy used in his shop. I did not shop around for it we just used what he had.

I was worried about them getting beat to death on the underside from rocks etc. off the front tires after I got 37s and ditched the mud flaps but they still look great. We did them in 2013 or early 2014 and I think I have one chip that is down into the liner where I hit something on the trail. It is holding up really well.

We spent time and $$$ doing them right but so far it is paying off. I hate prep/paint work and I didn't want to be taking them off to refinish every couple of seasons.

If you really wheel hard like I do, even the Line-X won't hold up. You get big chunks taken out. Seen this with a few guys we wheel within Moab last year. If you don't do it that often, and sliding down things, it's a good option.

Yeah, just about anything is going to peel off with the full weight of the truck dragging over them. Haven't been there yet but it is matter of time. I might find out that satin black spray bomb is my best friend after a few rounds of that.
