Tailgate emblem removal

Post by hemihead2 » Wed Jan 31, 2018 9:44 am

I recently bought a tailgate and need to get the existing emblems off. Is there an acceptable way to do it so as not to ruin the underlying paint? Heat? Cold? Scraping? Solvent? Anyone have an experience doing this? Thanks all!

Decals or the metal ones like on the 3G trucks? The chrome plated ones with adhesive backing can be removed by working dental floss back and forth under them.

After it's off, there's a rubber wheel drill attachment that makes it a breeze to clean the residual adhesive off. Only I can't remember what it's called at the moment...

Pretty sure its universally known as "the rubber wheel thing that goes on the drill"
Here's a link to an "eraser wheel" or whatever :)

Or, you can soak the adhesive with WD-40 and slip an old credit card behind the emblems. Then, wipe off the excess adhesive with WD-40. I debadged an entire Grand Cherokee that way, with no damage to the paint.
