Chains -- S8 Series -- Z486 on 315/70R17

Post by ramv » Sat Jan 27, 2018 1:03 pm

These are Peerless S8 high clearance. They are rated for more traction than the straight chains (not than v bars or the cross style.) They are split so install is very easy, just slide the two halves around the tires, connect three slip type fasteners, and then the tensioners. Five minute install in the driveway ( no snow, 35 deg mind you). I ordered two sets, only one has got here so far. No issues with touching anything yet.

They seem to have plenty of room so should fit a bigger 35" than the BFG 315s.

Just found out this should also fit... a bit cheaper but it is chain and not cable.. i bought the extra tensioners...this is not split so more of a hassle to install...

I probably will never use it but I like having it in case we travel in the winter over some passes...

I was going to get those for the rear but the chart from
Peerless showed their traction as Less. Also, figured for a set of four easier to learn how to put one style on.

Price is definitely better and they look solid.

I own the cable for my suv.. definitely easier to install...

The ladder type needs to roll forward to install.. it can be a pain but doable... ive owned both in the past

The rounded links don't bite into the ice as well as square link chains, and all the wear occurs at two high spots on the link, so they have a short service life.

My chains arrived... in a sack... and it is heavy....

For a backup, I would recommend the cables... much easier to install and lighter and comes in a nice carrying case...

Just drove from Idaho to Albuquerque through Durango. Other then a thin ground cover of snow on the 11,000 foot pass on US550 there wasn't any snow to be seen other than odd shaded spots. Roads were dry other then the pass on 550, where the snow was melting in the sun. Saw no skis anywhere. Durango was 62 degrees today. The west looks and feels like early May, not Feb 1. It looks like a very dry year is coming.

Nice! Look very easy to use. Have a part number or source handy? Running 35s, but as you said, I bet they'd fit...
