My extreme snow run

Post by TankerZak » Sun Dec 17, 2017 11:43 am

Yesterday, I went for a snowrun in Bend Oregon on the side of Mount Bachelor. I went with a great group of people that invited me along. They are a club and do these trips a lot. It was by and large a lot of heavily modified FJ cruisers, Tacomas, 4runners, but mostly 80 and 100 series Land Cruisers. By the end we were in what must of been two feet of snow. I had to crawl UP out of my truck and push snow aside with my door to get out. My diffs were carving a trail between the ruts.

I had to airdown my tires to 8 PSI and the tires stayed on. I started at 15 PSI... I had both lockers engaged by the end and the sway bar disconnected to level out the ride. It was also fairly rough. I did get stuck twice both of which I believe were my fault for letting it dig in before i backed up. First time I got stuck was at 15 PSI and rear locker only. Second time was at 8 PSI and fully locked on a steep hill when I got just to the left of the ruts. Everyone got stuck at some point. And it turned into a winchfest at the end to get us turned around.

Soon as I aquire the pictures I'll post them. DamageWagons skid plate and my Purple Cranium diff protectors got a work out even if it was just snow. I nailed a stump but the kickout on the Whitenuckle rock sliders worked perfectly and saved some serious body damage. They paid for themselves!! Overall no serious damage aside from what bushes normally do...

Color me formally impressed by the Power Wagon. It was also probably the most fun you can have with your clothes on!

Axles never hopped. We did get tossed one time real hard where i would say we bounced harder because we over came the flex... hit the boogie bump stop and got tossed to the other side and then hit that bump stop, lol.

Looks like fun. Here in southern Colorado there is barely any snow yet. I could still get to a 13000 ft pass near me with no issue. Maybe Thursday we will get that storm from the PNW...

Excellent question. I'm not too sure. I was in the pic (you can barely see my head over the cab) and i got these from someone else. I wondered the same thing or if the camera moved? Some mysteries will never be solved...

That's what a "smartphone" camera sometimes does - I have had similar photos where the phone software tried to make a panorama.

That is a good sized log to be carrying on your shoulder; has to be very dry wood and for sure not our mid-west hard maple...

Looks like fun in the snow!

The Land Cruisers were at 3.5 to 5 PSI. I started at 15 PSI because i thought the same thing. I got stuck and went down to 8 PSI and didn't loose a bead. And i worked those tires pretty hard. I think that on snow with minimal sideways force and mostly straight down and rotational it was fine and even preferred. On rock with any hillside type forces at play I think I would have thrown a tire off. Worked well for what we were doing. Deep snow like that is just a whole different animal. We did have a tacoma throw a bead. They put it back on with a portable air compressor and a ratchet strap... he was at 5 PSI.

Yeah, Toyo RT 35x12.5R17 on factory rims. The Toyo RT and MT do have the same sidewall construction and its fairly beastly. Maybe that helped...

I'm curious... did you guys see any tires significantly outperform others? Maybe not a particular brand or model, but M/T vs. A/T vs. R/T, C/T, etc?

Here in WNY where we get the heavy lake effect, I've always had better luck with less aggressive M/T's, or very aggressive A/T's. Seems to be a fine line between too aggressive and they dig too hard, and not aggressive enough, and they don't bite. Of course, the snow type makes a huge difference (wet and heavy compared to powder).

Anything with lug big enough to throw snow and not get packed and stay packed. MTs and agressive RTs and ATs seemed serviceable. Deep snow is a ton different than ice with a few inches of snow on top. I think when vendors sell "snow tires" they really selling road tires that do well on ice with a light snow covering. They aren't selling hey go play in two feet of snow tires, lol. Everyone was running fairly agressive MTs and my RTs did fine. I think my foot caused them to overspin more than them getting packed.

Yeah, I've played in deep snow with them all... Seems you had the same results I have.

Everyone raves about snow tires, but in deep snow they're no better than an all season (maybe an A/T if the snow tires are more aggressive). M/T's dig through that moderately deep snow, and bite into packed snow, or whatever's below it (other than ice, and if it's ice, all tires suck).

Plow guys here almost always use M/T's... They bite through the snow down to pavement much better than the A/T or snow tires, which just spin on the packed snow.

Best deep snow tires I ever had were the old Goodyear MT/R's (haven't tried the new ones). The outside lugs were wide enough to bite down and dig, but the center lugs held snow, and gave some flotation. Nothing sticks to snow better than snow, so those center lugs hold snow helped. Thinking the new MTR's might be good for the same reason, but they're hella expensive, and I hate directional tires...
