3rd Gen Front Driveshaft Removal?

Post by coder » Sat Oct 28, 2017 6:21 pm

Has anyone done this? I removed the bolts at the front axle first but can't seem to find a way to access the bolts were the driveshaft attaches to the transfer case the transmission brace is in the way? I have the shop manual it simply says remove the bolts.

Thoughts, opinions, tips, tricks, or random ideas welcome.

Peter did. He replaced his stock shaft with a NAPA shaft I believe. Can't remember the thread.

I did mine, just don't remember how. I think I just used a long extension for that end. It was harder at the axle end because of the torx bolts. You need a long torx on a socket drive to get enough leverage.

Either a really long extension with wobble or get in there with stubby ratchatting gear wrench. Do a bolt. Rotate shaft. So the next

What ??? I just remove the skid plate & bamm, it's right there. 5/8" bolts & I use a ratcheting wrench. I do loosen them a little before I remove the front axle side bolts. I also switched from the stupid torx head bolts (axle side) to hex head bolts. Much easier. I usually have the d-side front tire off the ground, so I can rotate the d-shaft by turning the tire with my foot, while under the truck. No stubby wrench needed, just a regular box end wrench or ratchet wrench.

When you're doing this in 25 below zero you get it off fast as you can. No time for skid plate removal. Especially when it's got 2-3" of ice on it lol. I wish I had a picture that day.

I hear you on this! Been there done that. I use a flex socket with a long extension on my little 3/8 impact and you can get them off pretty quick when you are freezing, with the wind blowing snow in your face, lol.

Hello TwinStick and TrueCowboy426,

I noticed you guys both have G56's I have an automatic. I'm wondering if there is more clearance when accessing the driveshaft at the transfer case with a manual because I could not get enough room to turn a full sized wrench at all so I will mostly likely be purchasing a stubby 16mm.

Thanks for everyones input feel free to keep the recommendations coming!

 You may be onto something there coder. I know they do have different d-shaft lengths for the auto & G-56. My skid plate is currently off mine (Just changed the t-case fluid & still gotta remove & lube the double cardan joint on the front d-shaft), so hold on, I'll go check.

Ok, the G-56 manual trans housing is shorter by a few inches. The t-case side, front d-shaft bolts are about 1/2" forward of the cross brace. Just enough to get a box end wrench or a ratchet wrench in there. First time ever that luck went in my favor !!! LOL

So, it would seem you could get them off easy enough with a battery or air impact, an extension & a wobble adaptor, after removing the skidplate.
