Western Ultramount II 8.5 on '13 PW

Post by bones » Fri Oct 20, 2017 4:04 pm

Just in case anyone wanted to see how its mounted with no winch removal. 2013 PW, 8.5' Western ProPlus with the Ultramount II system. I don't see any modifications other then cutting half of the ears off each of the Western brackets (pictured with yellow arrows). It looks like they may use a new cast part for the winch mount?

That's because the owners manual and Ram recommend not putting a plow on it.

They don't recommend having a truck camper installed either, but people still do it.

Im sure its just because of the relatively soft suspension.

Yes, its over the FGAWR of the front axle. Good read on FGAWR and it's affect here: http://info.bossplow.com/Blog/bid/15397 ... plow-Truck

bones -

that is a nice setup; doesn't look like plow undercarriage/mount will be much of a problem for off-road. The old ones sure were....

I have seen only a few pictures of Power Wagons with plows. Red's Auto in Ironwood, MI had a 2014 or 2015 with a boss plow for sale several months back but I only saw pictures.

Good luck with the snow plowing! It's always fun ;)

Sorry to revive an old thread... The Western looks like it fits nice. I'm going to be installing a Boss on my '13 within the next couple of weeks... Thinking the passenger side support bar may interfere with the smartbar, and require some cutting/welding (not a huge deal, but a PITA nonetheless).

How difficult was the wiring harness to install (if you did it yourself)? Without the Plow Prep, I guess it's tougher (not even an option on the PW). Couple thread's I've seen on it look like most guys just wire up the plow lights totally independent from the factory headlights, which might be what I end up doing.

I did not do the install myself, there is a local shop that is familiar with PW's and does them in less then a day. I don't think there are any issues without the plow prep, I think everything is still plug and play, at least with the Western harness it is.

Still have not plowed with it yet... not enough snowfall here in NE PA to have used it yet.

Wow, that's funny that you have not plowed snow yet! I've plowed at least 15 times so far this "snow season" - those snow piles in background are 8' high! Interested to hear how the PW works out for you for snow plowing.

:D I have plowed, just not with the truck. Every "storm" we had so far was only about 2-3" each in snowfall. So I use the ATV for that, otherwise I'd have everything all ripped up.

Nice. We've had plenty of snow this season, and cold... but not with 50*+ days, I was hoping to get the mount on with the garage door open... but it looks like it'll turn cold again just in time for the weekend, so on goes the heater and the wood stove.

Supposedly, the Boss mount fits, but I'm really worried about the smart bar. I'll update when I put it in. Probably going to do the harness one day, and the mount the next.

Here is a few photos of a Boss plow "undercarriage" on a newer PW, this was for sale last year & I never saw it in person - photos from dealer website. The Boss setup appears to hang down a lot farther than bones' Western mount.

Definitely appears way lower in those photos, you can see how far below the air dam it is. The good thing with the Western is that it has removable receivers (not pictured on my photos). With those receivers in, it is probably a bit lower, but no need to have them in when not plowing.

Yeah, the Boss' usually do, but the main frame is just 8 bolts that are easily accessible to remove, then you're just left with the ears that bolt to the frame that hang down, so it's not as bad.
