Thuren 3" coils and shock length.

Post by Socalboarder » Mon Aug 28, 2017 7:45 pm

So I bought Thurens 3" coils for my 2012 PW. He lists them as 2" over the 1.5" PW OEM height. So thats 3.5" total, over OEM stock. I ordered some Bilstein 5160s (25-187595), collapsed 15.2", extended 25.96". I measured the stock shock tower at about 4.5" above where the top of the spring sits. The bottom mounting bolt is about 1" below where the bottom of the spring sits. The 3" springs are 21.5" in height. So thats 4.5" + 21.5" + 1" for a total of 27".

1. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but 27" is the max shock length before the spring could fall out of place on full extension, correct?

2. The distance from the upper mounting point to the edge of the bump stop is 18", so longest compressed length can be about 17", correct?

So the Bilstein 5160s (25-187595) are the correct size vs Bilstein 5160s (25-197754) collapsed 16.38" extended 28.33"

Just want to make sure I am doing this right. I've never done it myself.

What are your thoughts?

Sounds like you are on the right track... just make sure the shocks dont bottom out before the bumpstops do. If they are a bit too long and allow the coils to fall out, then you can always get limiting straps.

There is a fellow not on this forum that was at PWiM who had those shocks. I asked him about the part numbers, after he did some research himself. He had a spacer lift, but was running these, which match your part numbers. So I'd say you're correct.
