37 in spare

Post by Black Pearl » Fri Aug 25, 2017 10:19 am

So what are you guys with 37s doing for a spare?
I currently strap one in the bed when going off road but I do not carry one otherwise.
I have looked at the Hitchgate but it looks like that might reduce rear bumper clearance quite a bit.
The Alluminess one looks great but quite pricey.
I just installed a soft topper and plan on sleeping back from time to time there but no can do with that big ol tire back there,
Any other options that I am not thinking about?

Deflate and stuff under bed perhaps? Options are pretty limited for such a large spare. I too have to sacrifice about half my bed to run with a spare. The hitchgate looses you some clearance for sure. The tiregate will screw your bed up if you take it Offroad much, it has a tendency to wreck sheet metal if you subject it to rough terrain at any kind of speed with a 37" hanging off it. Maybe you just have to roll the tire out to sleep? Might make a decent camp chair or something lol

I've always just kept it strapped in the bed... Only time it comes out is if im loading the bed with dirt/mulch/rock which isnt that often. Otherwise I just work around it. Not the most convenient but I hate not being prepared.

If you are running radials, I would always carry a spare. Even a 35" under the bed is better than nothing. I have destroyed so many radials over the years. It would suck to be stranded. I have also had several flats on 42" Irok bias plias so personally I can't imagine not carrying at least one if not two spares.

The last Duratrac I trashed, we tried patching and plugs with no success. You need a spare. Radials don't stand up to day to day abuses on a 7k lb truck.

I'm working on a production level solution for guys running a 37" spare. I will probably have something out by end of October, give or take a month. The solution will keep the tailgate intact and in part will be a full bumper replacement.

Thanks everyone.
I have done the roll in and out once and its not to bad. Better safe than sorry.
With the Kings there is really not much room in original spot (I have my steel spare wheel but no tire on it because I gave it to a buddy) 285 looks like it might make contact w shock.
Damage Wagon sounds very interesting!!!!!
Ill standby

I have always thought that if you run a 37 on one side and a 33 on the other, you would mess something up?

I've got a 285/75R17 on stock steel spare in the stock location. It is definitely CLOSE to my 2.5's on my 2011. Scared the crap out of me but I've never seen witness marks on the shock or tire. You should be good to go. I shove my tire as far away from that shock as I can.

Cool. Hope your thinking of removing the quarter panels behind the rear tires.

I ratchet strap mine vertical in the bed. Works and never really gave me an issue except bed space.

I've read somewhere that ARB doesn't recommend a smaller spare when running lockers...I see if I can find that - wonder if the same would be true of the AAM lockers.

With lockers, even with LSD. You want the same size tires on the axle. Different size tires WILL bind the drivetrain up.

Here it is:

"Despite being “open” when unlocked, ARB advises against using a smaller spare, as it could accelerate shim wear or potentially weld the cross-shaft to the gears. When possible it is best to lock the axle or put the smaller spare on the axle with no Air Locker, if you have one."

http://www.fourwheeler.com/how-to/trans ... operation/

Forgot the AAMs are also LSDs right? Noot sure I'd be without a full size spare where I roam if I had a wagon.

Laramie are you referring to cutting the bedsides? If so, there will be an option for cutting the bedsides but it is not required.

Yes. Case in point, note the scrape: Image

Add a rear winch plate and something that is not too awfully angular and I'm very interested. Lots of room if spare is not there I think for a winch.

I'd put it on the front and maybe even lower the air on the taller tire to help. No different than an old doughnut spare. Keep speed down and be cautious about it.

The rear is a gear operated LSD on the PW. So you still need to run the same size tires on the rear. The front is open until you lock it. You can run 2 different size tires on the front, ONLY if you stay in 2Hi. You put it into 4Hi, or 4Lo. The drivetrain WILL bind up. Too relief the binding to get it back into 2Hi. You will have to jack up the front axle with both tires off the ground. Don't ask me how I know.
