rear hub socket

Post by roughwater » Sat Aug 19, 2017 12:56 am

To service the rear hub inner seals and/or bearings on my Dodge Ram 2500 4X4, you need a special socket to remove the locknut. It's a round socket with 6 round (not square) pins on the perimeter. The only socket I can find for this is a #8954 socket made by Bosch that costs about $140. Crazy, isn't it!? If you don't believe me, type in on a search engine "hub socket 8954" and see for yourself. Does anybody have a source for a less expensive socket of this type? I haven't found one yet. I'm just a Saturday mechanic and don't want to drop $140+ bones for one.

Thanks in advance for any help on this,
roughwater

Drill hole pattern in plate, weld pins in, weld a socket of your favorite drive size to plate. New tool!

It doesn't need to have round pins. It's a hub bearing, your not going to put a lot of torque on it. In fact, I used a pair of right angle harbor freight long needle nose pliers on mine, a few years ago. Still fine. But if you insist on having a tool, the 14 dollar equivalent one will be fine.
