Another reason the Diesel PW may have never happened
Another reason the Diesel PW may have never happened
Payload capacity. Numbers are rounded and generally very close. It makes sense why Dodge and RAM both have never pursued this in over a decade, outside of other major limitation factors. The only way to reasonably increase payload capacity is to reduce articulation.
RAM 2500 Tradesman Power Wagon 4x4 w/ 6.4 & 4.10 gearing: 1,470
RAM 2500 Tradesman Crew Cab 4x4 w/ 6.4 Hemi & 4.10 gearing: 3,301 - factory payload(x) 55% = 1,470
RAM 2500 Tradesman Crew Cab 4x4 w/ 6.7 Cummins & 3.42 gearing: 2,362 - factory payload(x) 55% = 1,300
*(payload capacity - 10% tongue weight of max tow rating = payload available)
RAM 2500 Tradesman Power Wagon 6.4 Hemi max towing 9,800 w/ 10% tongue weight (1,470 - 980 = 490 available pounds for personnel, food, water, and gear)
RAM 2500 Tradesman Power Wagon 6.7 Cummins towing 8,100 w/ 10% tongue weight (1,300 - 810 = 490 available pounds for personnel, food, water, and gear)
Even the base 2500 Cummins 4x4 with its 2,362 payload capacity, has room to spare even pulling 17,000. (2,360-1,700 = 660 available payload)
A 2500 Cummins based PW just doesn't make sense for the intended use of the vehicle, a diesel would only negate its off-road supremacy.
Make sense or is my math way off base? Look at the Raptor for example with the two cab choices;
(Raptor Super Crew Cab - 1,200 payload & 8,000 max tow rating / 1,200 - 800 = 400)
(Raptor Super Cab - 1,000 payload & 6,000 max tow rating / 1,000 - 600 = 400).
400 pounds available after hooking up to only a 6,000 pound trailer in a full-size truck with 510 ft/lbs of torque, that's pretty unbelievable when looking at the numbers (from a legality standpoint).

Re: Another reason the Diesel PW may have never happened
This is assuming the GVWR stays the same at 8510, the diesel trucks have heavier GVWR rating.
The GVWR of the PW has stayed the same since 05, but the truck got heavier in 10' and 14' so the allowable payload decreased. If Mopar wanted they could have re rated the GVWR on the PW over the years to make the payload more reasonable.

Wow, sure enough, no winch behind the bumper. I missed that the first time, just assumed the Craigslist guy was an idiot.vanished wrote:That dealer sure put a lot of work into making it look like one...

Re: Another reason the Diesel PW may have never happened
I ask that question I get on Ram Forum every time and see guys swapping bumpers and hoods to make their 1500's look like 2500s and installing center consoles and other crap that they think is saving them from just buying the model that had that stuff already.TwinStick wrote: why the fuck would anyone---ESPECIALLY a dealer ?, invest that much time and trying to emulate & imitate something that it will NEVER be ??? Re: Another reason the Diesel PW may have never happened
There are more people than you know that care the most about how their truck LOOKS. Go on any of the other ram truck forums and you'll see it, guys buy a new truck and spend thousands on cosmetic "mods" and "upgrades", but don't spend a penny on tools/roadside kit, recovery gear, any part with more utility than OEM.TwinStick wrote: No winch, no lockers, Laramie interior !!! , why the fuck would anyone---ESPECIALLY a dealer ?, invest that much time and trying to emulate & imitate something that it will NEVER be ??? This truck is for the guy that thinks the PW trim looks cool as hell and wants one SO BAD, but has to have a diesel for one reason or another.
And I'm sure they're going to sell this stupid thing easily.

Re: Another reason the Diesel PW may have never happened
You guys are missing the point, old power wagons were just regular 4x4 dodges and have a looong history, some people just feel any 4x4 dodge should be called a PW. If I owned a modern PW I wouldn't care what anyone else put on their truck. I do have a diesel and it has gotten me everywhere I wanted and back without the extra articulation or locking diff's. It is even de badged, no identifying marks or logos at all except the ram's head on the grill and tailgate.

Re: Another reason the Diesel PW may have never happened
I am kinda with you verdesardog... in a way.
Aesthetics is a big part of my vehicles. I am picky about looks. And we all have an opinion of what looks good and what doesn't. If a guy wants a diesel truck that looks almost exactly like a PW, then so be it. Let him have it.
That being said, I myself would never drive something that is a blatant imitation of something it is not. Kinda like the guys driving pre-rubicon era jeeps with a RUBICON sticker across the hood with mailbox letters But if they like that, then
