BD 2WD Save

Post by ramv » Mon Jul 31, 2017 11:31 pm

So, went dirtbiking on the weekend. As we are into monsoon season, roads and trails were damp. Nice, no dust. (Colorado, no mud either, just better traction on the sand.) Drive back from trail head is a winding gravel road. Stability control gets all kind of crazy when doing mild power assisted turning. BD 2wd engaged, 4 Hi selected. TC button held and boom, stability control turned off. Much more enjoyable driving experience. Potentially better than my old Chevy (Chevy had more power/torque, no stability or traction control, but had torque management, so below 10 mph only allowed for 40% of total power, as well gov lok was less predictable than the gear driven LS in the Ram)

Too bad these trucks don't have a stability control like my wife's car (competition mode which has proved to be quite fun on icy/snowing backroads.) however the BD 2wd kit is worth it's weight in gold.

Sorry, what kit are you talking about here? Got a link to it? Sounds like it disables or cuts down the nannies off road in 2wd?

Ramv, does this allow you to lock the rear axle and disconnect the sway bar in 2wd and 4hi?

Basically all it does is prevents the CAD from engaging.

Exactly. Same as leaving a manual hub unlocked.

Its a simple system that plugs into the computer and when the switch is flipped it stops the CAD from being engage (but tells the computer the truck is in the 4wd.)

4Hi allows the sway bar to be unlocked to 18 mph, and stability control disengaged. With the CAD disengaged, and not powering the front axle, you don't get the binding typical in 4wd.

In 4lo with the switch flipped you can lock the rear diff too. If you lock the front diff, you go to true 3wd with the left front getting the power. Also allows for pretty decent burnouts, especially locked up

It's a slick system, I often considered wiring one up for my Avalanche 2500 (no aftermarket) so I could use 2wd low range. Handy on the big passes grossing over 20klb (pavement) or backing up. (4L85 E trans reverse was 1.48 :1 same as second so really strained backing my two car hauler around.)

This is also handy for backing up my trailer into my steep drive way. Love it. Bought all the gear to make my own and this came out the week I bought all the crap. Much cleaner and also easily wired to the switch of your choice (going to my switch pros), see the updated install manual on their website. That guide was changed I think since I purchased as that's not the same instruction I followed I think.

Also awesome for selecting the right speeds on slow bumpy rides to hunting and camping spots w/o binding.

True 3wd got me off the trail a lot in my 2nd gen when I had stock axles. Good to have ability to lock the diff power the right front if you have a busted inner LH axle.

Very cool. Going to hit the boat ramps with the truck in factory CAD engagement form for a bit. If 2wd hi is an issue and subsequently, 4w lo binds too much, this will be on my list!
