Well, I had to bite the bullet.............
Well, I had to bite the bullet.............
Did some more research on my front Y-pipe with the converters on it. Found it online for $870 but the fun began when I picked up the phone & called. Shipping to me was $318, on top of the $870. Then there is a $200 core charge. Then I would have to pay $318 to ship my core back to them, to get the $200 core charge back !!!! So, after calling my dealer, it was actually cheaper to buy it from them, in the end, but not by much. Bonus is, no shipping old one, just return to dealer 10 minutes away. Price + tax + core charge = $1582. I will get the $200 core charge back, when i return the old pipe/cats. I think it is G-Damn ridiculous how we get screwed here. New exhaust from front to back would be $2500 just for parts.
I am looking at another $1000 for labor, to have my garage replace all the manifold bolts with S-Steel ones & install that pipe ! I don't think any are broken yet, which should make his job easier. Man, I am just getting killed lately with bills !
I was afraid to pull the camper any distance with the hole in the exhaust pipe so close to the engine. Did not want to do any damage to the engine. Not sure if it would or not, I really don't know. You can sure hear the engine tick when I step on the gas, right from where it was welded for a temporary fix. Lasted about a year or so.

Re: Well, I had to bite the bullet.............
NY State has put so many Environmental & safety regulations on salvage yards, that they all went out of business around me. We used to have 3, now we have none. The 1 that is within driving distance wants so much for their parts with no guarantee, that it makes more sense for me to buy new. If I paid them $650 for a used one & it failed a year later, I would want to kill someone. I called them for PW wheels/rims one, they said $400 each, used & scratched up !!!
All the muffler shops said they can't touch the front Y-pipe with the converters unless it is a factory OEM part, since NY passed that law !!!

And I'm sitting here with an entire exhaust system for an 09 just sitting in the metal pile. Less than 30k miles. I can't use it for anything. Would any of it be any help?

Sure it would be of help. But I have no doubt that getting it across the border would be a MAJOR hassle, if not impossible. Has to have CARB # i think. Not much I can do, you gotta play their game.

Hey Rusty, gonna be in your state next month. Nowhere near you though, in Philly for a day, eat at the Reading Terminal Market, then go either up or down the coast, eat some good seafood & come home.

Re: Well, I had to bite the bullet.............
Yeah, thought I was done bending over when I retired, guess not. Took them (NYS) 13 months to get my retirement check right and finally start taking my health care out of it ! Some months I got the bill with 10 days notice, some with 20 days notice, one month with 3 days notice. So, every month we had to send the payment registered, certified return receipt mail, @ $7 a month, except the month we got 3 days notice. We had to overnight it, in addition to registering & certifying it, that was like $25. If we even lapsed 1 payment, they would cancel us & then, instead of paying $420 a month, it would jump up to $1200 a month, like a brand new customer, instead of one since 1988. When my wife retired, it only took them 3 months to get her check right. She was a civilian, not an Officer.Colibri wrote:Man, that's ridiculous. And to think, here in New Jersey, right next to New York, I just got a letter from the DMV stating that I no longer have to go for safety and emissions. I am officially exempt.

Same in CA. If you don't have a CARB approval on your cats, you can't pass smog test, even if tailpipe emissions are clean. MY PW has to go in this morning for its smog certification. There are regular smog stations and Gold smog stations. The difference is that the Golds are not allowed to do any repairs, and they get to charge you a hell of a lot more for the test. My test will be about $80 and the tags for the truck are $331. On a 12 year old truck. Every damn year, and they increase $100 per vehicle later this year. And state gas taxes are going up about $.60/gallon incrementally over the next few years. If you retired farts do decide to come west, cross CA off your list. Unless you like getting screwed repeatedly and for no good reason. I hate this state. All the muffler shops said they can't touch the front Y-pipe with the converters unless it is a factory OEM part, since NY passed that law !!!

Re: Well, I had to bite the bullet.............
When I retired. We looked at a lot of places to move to. Decided to stay in Pa. No state income tax on retirement money. The county we live in has no emissions inspection. One plan for Obombacare. Which I hate.
Cost for vehicle registration per year:
Motorhome - $ 118.00
Truck, 8,8000 lbs - $159.00
Car - $37.00 x 2 = $74.00
Motorcycle - $19.00
Total $370.00 for 5 vehicles. In some states. I would be looking at $4000.00+ per year.

Re: Well, I had to bite the bullet.............
Got the call today. Front Y-pipe w/cats is in. I go to pick it up. Ring the bell 1x, then silence it when parts guy comes. He says "Can I help you?" I said "I am here to pick up my OBSCENELY EXPENSIVE front Y-pipe for my Power Wagon !" He laughed & brought it around. I told him "for $1540.00 I was hoping you would at least carry it out to my vehicle ?" He did, like a champ. He asked "where is the old one ?" I said ahhhhh-still on the truck. I want to make damn sure it is gonna be the right one before I pay someone to take it off. He said bring the old one back & we will reimburse you the $200 core charge. Told him ok, as soon as I can get in in. Still makes me .

I have most of my exhaust parts off of my 06 power wagon. Not the cats but I think I have everything else. Let me know if you want anything. Just pay shipping from North Carolina to you. I am positive I have the exhaust manifolds and muffler that was on for a few days.
