2012 or 2017??

I'm thinking of getting a 2017 and selling my 2012... What do y'all think? I have the unlimited power train warranty right now, so that will be hard to let go. I love my truck, but I'm just wondering if the 6.4 is worth it. Anything new on the 17s that make it worthwhile, or should I keep my 12? Pros/cons either way?
I have the DB exhaust, new y pipe, kn air filter, diablosport tuner, and 285/75/17 Toyo AT2 extreme tires.
Thanks
:winchmob:

What do I think? I think that is a decision you need to make for yourself, not someone else.

Not only is the motor different, but the suspension is completely different, interior is changed (although most will argue it is better), the axles have higher gearing, and of course the different styling on exterior. Aside from that, it is still basically the same truck

Isnt the lifetime powertrain warranty still available? I have it on my '16.

Depends on priorities. The 2012 will be better offroad with flexier suspension and has way more suspension potential than the newer trucks in terms of shocks. The newer trucks solve some of the general issues with the era the 2012 lands in, the engine is torquier and gives better mileage, comes with long arms. The newer trucks are just a little bit nicer in a lot of ways, but it's essentially the same truck.

I really like the newer dash/interior of the 2013 and up models, but not enough to trade my 2012 in on a new truck. I have a hunch that when you compare the performance of the 6.4L with 4.10's to the 5.7L Hemi and 4.56's that you're running right now, you won't notice any major gain in performance. At this point I'm personally waiting to see what the 2020 HD Ram looks like. I just haven't seen anything with the newer Power Wagon's that makes me want to get rid of a truck that is paid for and still has a lot of life left in it (I just turned 45,000 miles last week). Unless your truck is starting to give you major problems, I'd say keep what you have.

Thanks guys. I was just wanting to hear your opinions on the new truck. If I had heard that the 17s were way better I might pull the trigger. Might go take a look at some. I'll most likely just keep mine.

If you go "take a look", I can almost bet you will end up with a new one hahahaha.

I'm a keep it vote. I used to change trucks every 2 years. Now I like owning my trucks free n clear. And I can do what I want to them.

If I had a 12 free and clear I'd keep it and get something else as a daily driver.

What scares me about the new trucks. Is replacing the touch screen in the dash. That's $7,000. I just had to replace the sunroof control on my '13 GC TrailHawk. That was $800.00.

Its all about what you want to me.... if you like yours and are not concerned about having the latest and greatest so to speak, just for the sake of having new... then keep and enjoy. If I had a 2012 that was paid for it would probably look like 2wagons1driveways truck (Lee) awesome!!!

I know the 2012 and 2017 are vastly different inside and underneath. That being said, I wouldn't jump into a new payment until the new bodystyle comes out in 2020.

I'd keep the 2012 personally! (that's what I'm doing!) But, if you think you're going to want a new truck anytime soon, get one BEFORE the new 2020 body style! Every leak I've seen of the 2020 body style has been absolutely hideous to such an extent that I am going to be pinching pennies to try to get a new 2019! (I'll still keep my 2012, it'll be my offroad toy, the 2019 would be my DD/tow pig) The 6.4L is a badass engine but (IMHO) that engine is the only advantage that a 2017 has over a 2012. Question: is yours an early 2012 or late 2012??? If it is an early 2012 it'll have the NVG271 transfercase (rather than the Borg Warner case late 2012s like mine and newer have), if it has the 271, you can do a slip yoke eliminator on it which is a boon if you wheel your Wagon a lot. (you cannot do an SYE on the newer BW case since it has a slipyoke housing that is integral to the back half of the case; also the low range ratio of 2.72:1 that's in the 271 is slightly lower than the BW case's low ratio (so, if you have an early 2012 that is another advantage it has over the 2017!) I like the interior, leaf spring rear suspension, and lack of CAD better so, 2012 FTW for me! BUT, I will say, if you want to run 40s, a 2017 has the advantage since the front axle can be moved forward 1.5" easily..... oops, off on a tangent there..... anyway..... I say keep the 2012, lol!

No one is paying $7k for a new heads up display. Aftermarket units are $2500 and OE is below $1k.

Our Toyota salesman told us that he sold a Tundra to a NYS Trooper & his dash unit went out after warranty was up & they wanted $9000.00 for a new one. IDK if that was BS or not but that would certainly suck if it was anywhere even near that price.

https://parts.toyota.com/a/Toyota_2016_ ... -8603.html

$4831.00 for the Navigation.

https://parts.toyota.com/a/Toyota_2016_ ... -8601.html

$1542.00 just for the amp. $802.00 for the radio.

$7175 just for parts from the dealer ! :jawdrop: :jawdrop: :jawdrop:

I take it back, Toyota owners are paying $7500 for the touch screen. It comes with drum brakes too.

Did you end up making a decision? I was debating getting one of the new 2017 wagons, or picking up one of the older ones with the 5.7. I ended up finding a used 2012 with 19K, and I love it. I liked the fact that the payload was about 450lbs more than the 2017. I had a 2015 1500 and the payload on that truck was actually 40lbs more that the new Power Wagon. I have a co-worker who is a DOT certified truck inspector and he said he would not be too concerned with the weight ratings unless it was a commercial vehicle, but I figured the 2012 was pretty attractive at $20,000 less.

I also like the 4.56 vs the 4.10 gears. I test drove both, and the 2012 seemed to be a little more spirited. Take it for what its worth, but I would keep the 2012.

If you picked up the 2017, I do like the radio and dash better. I also think the new paint and decals look nice. Either one is still a Power Wagon. Curious to know which direction you went.

Personally I think the 2017 is way better in every way. I would not have bought an earlier PW. Could not stand the look, 5.7 service hungry, gas mileage, ect, ect. Ram sold me a truck because of the improvements. That being said if you can afford it, go for it. If you are a mortal like most of us trading in every 5 years is a bad idea, you just got it paid off its better to drive it rent free for some years from a financial stand point. Modern heavy duty trucks should be serious trouble free for 200K++

Keep it... Wait until the next gen trucks come out, give those a few years for the wrinkles to disappear, and stash the cash of your payment in your mattress... Then, when those new trucks really are ready (2021 maybe?), you'll have enough cash for a large down payment, or to be able to buy a 17/18 without much of a loan.

If you don't spend most of your time off-road flexing, I think you would find the latest generation truck far superior to your older truck -IMHO

Here is a past post on this issue...
http://forum.powerwagonregistry.org/vie ... 923#p59923

And my 2014 PW gets about the same unloaded fuel mileage (17 mpg) as my pre DEF ram CTD. But there does seem to be I bi-modal distribution of 6.4L PW fuel mileage from reports on this forum - they either get 13mpg or 17mpg

Honestly, I think you'll be fine with the new suspension even if you do flex out a lot.

The real limitation as guys like Marcus have stated is the newer trucks have lesser options for going bonkers, but fewer problems from the get go. Like I can't do 3.0's or even nutso 4.0 Kings because our trucks are pin-top. The Older ones have more options in terms of going crazy. But if you aren't going to be building a buggy, the newer trucks ride all around nicer.

To me the extra flexy 4th Gen Suspension is better then practically all but rock buggies. For me, to need any more we would be talking high Sierras trails where the PW is too large anyways. Good point on waiting until the next model. Just a year or two out, I would wait to see what it looks like. Maybe some auto pilot functions....

If you really want to modify the truck or have great suspension options, if you want something cheaper to play with that still has good internals, build quality, drivetrain, then the 10-13 trucks rock. Excellent years to modify.

If you want something ready to go out of the box and with a nicer interior, that has also addressed several of the shortcomings of the previous years, the 14+ trucks are solid and are great, but you can't modify them to the extent the earlier trucks are open to.

Who knows what the new generation brings. Hopefully they focus on the suspension and refine the concept they're currently using, and maybe open it up to modification.
