So everyone knows how well a bull bar is fastened.....

Post by nts007 » Tue Jun 20, 2017 3:14 pm

Moderately risky attaching a hi lift to a bull bar. More risky attaching it to a Chevy. But totally worthless because when a curb can hang you up......not to mention exactly where does he plan to lift from.... just started laughing when I seen this

Ignorance is bliss. Come out west. Or have bad eyes. :poke:

That being said, I found that when I upgraded the lights with HID's and LED highs, that they put out as much power as the light bar. It wasn't adding much more to the equation.

I found the light bars don't give any real distance. Just trick you into believing they are so good because of the total brightness. The light force throw light to where you need it. Instead of just shining light around the place.

To be fair, there are varying degrees of quality and light output among the different light bars. Most aren't any good at all and the few that are worth a damn are expensive and outperformed by quality hid lights with large reflectors. They're good from a packaging standpoint, I simply don't have room for bigger lights on the front of my truck so I went with a Baja designs bar and fogs, the spot optics's on that will throw almost as far as hid and with a good color temperature. An excellent compromise lighting option. Windshield mounted bars are worse than no lights though. They glare of the hood and windshield and destroy your ability to see anything.

This is the challenge when designing a light. There are so many variables and variations that come into play. Spot, flood, and combinations of the two sound simple and it is. However, being able to control where and how much takes a bit of work to figure out. I believe it will come down to how efficient and effective it is as well as the type and color temp the light produces.

Yea, you have to drop some serious cash on a light bar with good optics like Baja Designs in order to get a really good output that will outperform your headlights.

That being said, I've noticed the smaller units add a lot of additional makeup. When I was running the D2's they were a big improvement over the fog lights.

In the new bumper, I plan on running Baja Designs Squadron Pro's. I'm not 100% sure if I will just mount my existing light bar for the heck of it, or upgrade to something else. I think I'll run the Squadrons and then evaluate my needs.

A lot of guys just buy stuff to buy stuff.

Bingo!

9.9/10 people on the road with roof-mounted LED bars got a smoking deal on eBay because "They're all the same" and a $100 bar is definitely as good as an $1,800 bar...

I've been racing with the best LED bars in the business for years and a roof-mounted bar is ONLY useful in perfectly clean air. Any dust at all and you're blinding yourself. They also mount above your eye level so they cast no shadows on obstacles providing the driver no aid in determining the height of rocks, the depth of holes, etc. And for what it's worth, the latest Baja Designs bars can be comfortably used at speeds over 100mph. You get what you pay for.

I use a few bumper mounted BD lights MUCH more often than the 40" BD bar on the roof. Furiosa will get a set of Squadrons soon, 2 corners and 2 spots in the fog pockets. If I find a good option for LED bulbs in the headlights, I'll do that first though.

Anyways, back to that "off-road" Z71. Reminds me of the meme I made that spread on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/p/BLl_t26A277/

Damn straight! Listen to the voice of experience here ^^^^, there's a reason all my auxiliary lights are at headlight level or below. Can't go fast without seeing where you're going AND having shadow to allow for depth perception when reading terrain.

The law here actually states that all auxiliary lights with the capability to be engaged whilst driving on public roadways must be mounted below the headlights. Anything over is to be disabled or covered. But I guess a switch is considered disabled. Regardless it's illegal for use on a public roadway. And it's useless on the highway as it destroys your night vision ability by creating a huge wash of bright light in the foreground. And nothing 1000' and farther. Safer to hold a flashlight pointed at your face while driving
