Mine was build November of '15 but I didn't get the recall. So bizzare.

My truck is scheduled to go in tomorrow morning for the repair. Also gonna have them take a looksie at my wobbly upper ball joints and the damp/seeping seal between the trans and transfer-case.

I had the recall performed yesterday. Have driven it about 40 miles since then, and the periodic shudder that the truck has had in the past has not happened since. Not sure if it had anything to do with it, or if I just dont have enough miles on it yet for the shudder to happen again.

While I scheduled the service to be performed, I asked that they also check out my loose upper ball joints and dripping tranny/transfercase. Their invoice states;

- Customer states both upper ball are joints wobbly - Inspected both upper and lower ball joints, no problems found, no signs of looseness or damage, no problems found.

- Customer states he noticed small trans drip, check and advise - Found no evidence of leaks from front to rear, no problems found.

      :box: :box: :box:

Some people or so freakin stupid.

The upper ball joints are definitely wobbly. My 5 year old daughter could figure that out. Also, there is a very small amount of red oil saturated around the area where the transmission and transfercase connect together... I guess you need beer goggles on to be able to see that

I don't have any shuddering or slipping that I can feel. I also still don't have a recall notice.

So I just called my dealer to schedule a service and possibly the trans recall. She cross checked my VIN in the system and said my truck is not included. I have a 2016 Laramie PW manufactured in July 2016.

I've heard that some minor play in the ball joints is normal. But seriously I have heard minor play is normal if within spec. Quote from another forum - I would measure the play with a dial indicator after looking up the spec. They do allow quite a bit of axial play, I think it is about .060", and I would leave them alone if they are still within that. There's nothing wrong with a little bit of play.

As for the trans/transfer case leak, at least you've reported it in case of failure or a warranty issue.

If you have .060" play in your upper ball joint, that thing is blown to hell. I had about .040"-.050" in mine and I had tires-off-the-ground death wobble. There should be so little play that you cannot visibly tell. If you can move the knuckle with the tire off, it is toast. I could move mine with the tire off, but it was so little I didn't know if I was fooling myself or not. .060" lateral play on an upper ball joint is baloney.

Well, that was my exact intent, but I dont think I got it across to them. I didnt want them necessarily tearing the tcase/trans apart to redo a seal, but I did want them to look at it with their own eyeballs and note it in the computer in case I do have a future issue. Guess I gotta schedule another stupid appointment

I dont know exactly how much play they have, but it is certainly quite minimal. Its enough to visibly see the tire wiggle back and forth when holding it at 6 and 12, but its hardly visible to see the upper ball joint move when starring right at it while wiggling the tire... if that makes any sense. Its not like I am getting odd tire wear or death wobble, so it is not a huge concern of mine. But, I did want the dealer to note it in their computer system

checked '17 vin (manufactured 4/17) no recall or campaign

about the upper balljoint. book says to put dial indicator on the knuckle and pull out on top of tire while pushing in bottom. take measurement. then push in top of tire while pulling out bottom. take measurement. add measrments together and replace joint if .060 or more

Got my recall notice, now I have to find a dealer to take it to. I don't trust the one closest to me with anything more involved than wiper blades - my truck won't be going there.

Those who have gotten a recall notice, can you post the manufacturing date of your truck? Has anyone been able to determine the extent of the recall? My dealer checked my VIN and said no recall. 2016 manufactured 7/16.

Trans recall

Post by DamageWagon » Thu Jun 15, 2017 9:17 pm

It probably has more to do with manufacturing line than manufacturing date. I haven't paid much attention to your "best year trucks except our transmissions are garbage" but it seems like the dates have nothing to do with your issues. Probably a parts supplier to assembly line issue. Does anyone know where your transmissions are assembled? Cincinnati? Timbuktu?

Dealer did my trans solenoid pack today. Shifts better, but I think that's because they probably disconnected the battery before doing the work .

While it was there they finally found out the drive train control module was bad and that was what was making the 4Wd shift in progress message (and others) pop up on the EVIC. Had it in for that before, but it never had any stored codes, this time it had four.

My 2015 went in to limp mode 2 weeks ago (under 20k miles). No forewarning, shuddering or any other symptom. Also, no recall notice received.

Ended up being a bad solenoid pack (internal). Still under warranty.

This hadn't better be a constant repair every 20k...
