My trip to Moab - April 2017

Post by LagunaH1 » Sun Apr 23, 2017 1:36 pm

Hi everyone,

Not sure if posting a separate "trip report" is considered a no-no here, given that there is a dedicated pictures thread...... If that's the case then, mods, please feel free to move or delete as appropriate.

Yesterday I got home from a trip to Moab with friends from another forum I hang out on from my time in the Hummer world.

I only ran 2 trails, plus some play time on Finns n things, but the PW did really great for an almost completely stock truck.

The first trail was "Top of the world". The first 2/3 to 3/4 of the trail were super easy. Then we reached the loop which ends at the top. The way up on the loop was also really easy, I naturally had to pick somewhat conservative lines compared to the H1's and Scorpions in the group. The way down from the top was.... uhm..... challenging to say the least. The ledges were TALL and the PW could barely hold itself still when I was pushing the brake pedal all the way down to the floor. Regardless, thanks to the group's excellent spotters and rock stackers, I made it down in one piece.

The next day was Hell's Revenge. This is probably my favorite trail in Moab to date. The PW did great and I got some very positive comments about how flex the truck is, and how well it does. Pictures:

The next few days I didn't wheel much, except for playing on Finns n' things and Baby Lion's back. Then Thursday morning, I headed home by ways of Monument Valley, Flagstaff and then home. Pictures:

So you didn't do any of the challenging sections on Top of the World going up? Also, there is something up with your brakes, had zero issues on Top of the World holding the truck while in low. I'd get that looked at. Did you do Hells Gate?

Just so I understand....

You found it reasonably easy to hold the truck while in low, and in D (or any forward gear) while the nose was pointed down, or the opposite? (In low, in R and the rear pointed down)

AFAIK you are running 35's too, so if you can do the above easily then I'd say yes, something's different between our rigs.

I was in low in 1st, manually selected, with tow haul on (not that it matters, but I always select it when offroad) - I was also on the stock Durtracs last year when I ran all the trails I ran. Including Hells & Top of the World. Didn't use bypasses on Top of the World, all of it is doable with a stock wagon. About 28psi probably that day, maybe a little less.

Trying to think why your truck wants to run away from you.

Maybe his PW doesn't like him? :o

My first rip out to Moab. We did Launch Pad. Had no problem with the brakes there.

I was out there from 4/20-4/24!!!

I didn't wheel my PW though. Used it to pull my friends trailer out, and rode dualsports all weekend.

MOAB RULES!!!!

Did you by chance have dinner at the broken oar one of the evenings? I saw a blue PW parked there....
