Gas caps.......WTF !

Post by TwinStick » Tue Apr 11, 2017 6:11 pm

This is a rant.

Check engine light came on. P0456. Checked at Auto Zone.
I swear to GOD that the human race is getting dumber. We are not evolving, we are devolving (if that's even a word). I'm sure reloaderguy will chime in & bless us with the answer. So, how f-ing hard is it to design a gas cap that works ? Seeing as how vehicles have been being made for over a century, you would think we would have at least that part of a vehicle down pat by now. But, nope, not even close. I have NEVER had a problem with any gas cap, on any vehicle, until NY State made it a mandatory part of the yearly vehicle inspection. I went through 8 gas caps on my 2000 Dakota in 42,000 miles. 6 on my 2004 Ram 2500 in 26,000 miles. And I am on my 3rd on my 2008 Power Wagon in 45,000 miles. This time, though, I did NOT buy a Genuine Mopar replacement part. I bought one made in China, from Auto Zone. All the others were Genuine Mopar replacement parts. Maybe that was the problem. The Chinese one fits better than a new Mopar one, by far. Seems to seal a LOT tighter as well. Duralast- $10.16 with my discount. $32 @ the dealer. Time will tell if the Chinese got it right.

i had the check engine light on along with the check fuel cap light. replaced cap and still had lights soon after clearing codes. turned out it was some emission crap system thing. bogus.

I had the same thing MSCH, it ended up being my NVLD sensor. Thankfully only $40 for Mopar. Of course this is after I replaced the gas cap.

The digital mileage readout said gASCAP when i started it up, about a week before the check engine light came on. That P0456 code has always been the gas cap for me, in all 3 Dodge trucks. I also had 2 of the 02 sensor codes come on in the 2004 once. One before the cat & 1 after the cat, right/pass side. I got some bad gas & had to use about 6 bottles of dry gas, then those 02 sensors codes came up within a day or 2. Took out the 02 sensors, sprayed & wiped/cleaned them with brake cleaner, then sanded them till shiny & reinstalled. No more issues, lights went out.

Where is the NVLD sensor located ?

Hahahahaha. Well if you drill a hole through the old gas caps you could probably stick a bolt through them all and make winch rollers out of them.

The NVLD sensor is the tiny white box that is on the side of the emissions box. Behind the cab on drivers side on the frame rail. It is plugged into a black box.

Our Durango is always setting that code. After changing out the gas cap, and other parts that cost over a $100 it still sets the code a couple times a month. I ended up just buying a $12 code reader off of Amazon and keep it in the vehicle. I just clear the code whenever it comes on.

My second gen Dodge ate gas caps. Of course sliding them on trees and rocks and ripping them off completely may have been the issue. :P

Buy a Chevy I guess, my 2005 was 11.5 years old, had two fuel tanks, got 11 mpg and had 200,000 miles when I sold it and was on the original gas cap.

Someone stole the gas cap off my Ranger so no comment on Ford.

Go ahead and buy another gas cap now and put it under the seat, you'll never have another issue. My gas cap was acting up and I bought another one, got busy, forgot about it, never changed it, and that's been probably a year ago and haven't had the problem since. hahaha. I kept getting the actual gas cap is loose light on the dash.

Like i said, it was NEVER a problem until NY State made it a mandatory part of the yearly inspection. Since then, everyone i know in NY, has had problems with their gas cap, regardless of make or model. Maybe a simple way to charge $30 for a .25 cent part they have made in China ? Even our Made in America Toyota Corolla gas cap has been replaced (1x in 150,000 miles). And yes, I only turn till it clicks one time.

We used to have a 10 day grace period. So, if it failed, you could bring it home, fix it, & bring it back. Now, the first thing they do before they even start it up, is to scrape off your old inspection sticker, so your screwed if it fails. You are at the shops mercy. If it is emissions related (which the gas cap is, in NY), your vehicle can't leave the shop until it is fixed ! Inspections are like Automobile Mafia, once your in, your in & it seems even when you think your out----they pull you back in ! lol

I had an argument with a state inspector a few years ago, he said my gas cap failed and I needed to buy a new one from him for $25 or I wouldn't pass. I asked him if my check engine light was illuminated, he said no, so I asked how it was the Chrysler nvld system didn't detect a gross evap leak and trigger the mil if the cap was bad? He didn't have a good answer lol.

Ever since they did that, I feel like I'm being forced by NY State, to do business with "Vinny the loan shark". (in your best Godfather voice) "You are just gonna have to pay." "I got some bad news & some worse news." "Bad news is: it didn't pass & the worse news is.......it's gonna cost you XXXXX to fix it." Sad.

I think it's nuts how California is pretty horrible but still much better than the places you guys are talking about. When we go for a smog check, the shop can either do smog, or do repairs, never both. They also don't know jack about what fails you if you do fail, they just tell you it failed and give you a chemical readout of your exhaust that someone can interpret. Then you leave and do whatever you want and come retest. And it makes absolutely no sense to me how we have a massive Mexican population that has a huge tendency to tow way above GCWR, load pickups massively above GVWR, drive on donut tires, half the lugnuts missing, whatever, yet we have no vehicle inspection in the state. If any state ne de inspections it is ours and I am in strong support of it, but for safety reasons exclusively. Go kill yourself in a rickety vehicle, I don't care. But don't kill me because of your cheapness or carelessness.

I would be fine if NC did just safety buy to hook up to the computer and do emission checks and charge you more is just crazy
