Need some options..........
Need some options..........
on the best way to mount a laptop computer, in our 3rd Gen Power Wagon with a manual stick shift transmission, so the passenger will be able to use it while in motion. I know nothing about whats available, so thanks for your help.

Check out RAM Mounts... They have some laptop mounts that would work well... A lot of the PD's use them in the cruisers.

Re: Need some options..........
Havis makes the mount we used in our vehicles. It is a post that bolts to the floorboard and has a brace on the trans tunnel usually. Very heavy duty, good quality. I wouldn't trust RAM mounts with that weight and the overhang. The Havis mount lets you put the laptop right in front of you like it is in your lap. Passenger friendly though passenger does lose some floor space

Have you thought about a tablet PC instead of the outdated laptop setup? So many better options these days.TwinStick wrote:Thanks. Those both look like great, sturdy mounts.

We have never even had a laptop yet ! I guess they must have become obsolete before we got around to getting one ? I was thinking laptop because of the larger screen, that it would be easier to see details on the screen when in motion. To have the wife keep an eye on the weather radar for extreme weather during tornado/hail/storm season in the "tornado alley" region of the US. She seems to be addicted to the weather channel, so i figured i would put that to good use when traveling. I love watching extreme weather from a safe distance, but don't have any desire to part of it !

I meant for onboard setup's it feels outdated. I am just thinking of the big old Toughbook taking up a bunch of space in the cab on a ram mount with a USB GPS receiver in the window.TwinStick wrote: We have never even had a laptop yet ! They make laptop/tablets like the Microsoft Surface, HP makes one, Dell does, IBM has a nice convertible, Samsung makes some. Although an ipad or android device can also work and cost less upfront depending, with screen sizes up to 12 inches. Touch screen laptops and convertibles usually up to 15 inches.
The advantages are smaller area taken up when mounted, using a blue tooth keyboard or mouse. Depending on your software, some devices have built in GPS. There are a lot of good options.
I'd think about a system/setup first, then worry about mount. Not mount first. But that's just me.
I'm thinking honestly about using a ipad Mini since the screen is enough for me, with Gaia GPS and Motion X as my two main navigation systems. But also because I can use it for aviation too when flying like ForeFlight.
There is a great app, MyRadar that pilots use that might be worth looking into for weather stuff.

X2 on the surface. It's worth less than horse shit. Got one for the wife. Used it like 5 times and it hasn't been since. Bought a real laptop for her. I've used the iPads for years. Best way to go. Do not waste your money on a surface

Re: Need some options..........
You probably only need a laptop if you are going to do some actual "computing." If you are only accessing websites for weather and GPS and surfing and email, then a tablet makes a lot more sense. Cheaper, smaller, lighter, easier to mount and to hide when the vehicle is parked. You'll need to figure out how you will access the interwebs, but if you use your cellphone as a wifi hotspot, that problem is solved. I have never had a ChromeBook, but am thinking about getting one for my wife because she no longer needs a "real" computer. Lots of choices out there. My thinking is that if your phones are Apple, get an iPad. If your phones are Android, get a ChromeBook. Much simpler to stay with one OS.

True, but if you are already paying for a cellphone hotspot, then you don't need to pay another $30-$50/mo for a cellular data plan on the iPad. One of my hunting buddies has an iPad with data plan, so he is the navigator when we are in unfamiliar territory. Works well and allows me to concentrate on driving. My iPad has built in cellular. Re: Need some options..........
Ah my iPad data is bundled with the cell and I don't pay any extra for it. Have 45 gigs between 10 phones and 2 iPads. Only 4 phones have access to data the rest have data blocked. It doesn't matter if I use the iPad or phone hotspot the data comes from the same bucket. Business plans. Have pretty much unlimited everything on all the phones North America wide. Pretty sweet setup. I've been watching g this thread gettin an idea for a permanent iPad mount. I currently have a magnetic setup using a stainless ball attached to the dash and a magnetic disk on the back of my phone case. Pretty strong. I was thinking 2 or 3 would hold an iPad easy. But haven't gotten anything started yet
