Ball Joint Press

Post by Jbostick » Mon Oct 03, 2016 12:04 am

Hey guys, my ball joints are worn and I have decided on the DynaTrac joints. Can anyone give some recommendations on a good ball joint press? Looks like this OTC Large frame is recommended from a lot of the diesel sites. What adaptors should i need? I hate to have to buy all the adaptors in the big kit if i don't need them.

I recently rebuilt the front end in my 2006. I don't know if there are any differences between 2006 and 2012 that need to be addressed, but I don't believe so as the ball joints I purchased say they are for 2003 to 2012.

I know the 7249 kit wouldn't work. The press was not large enough and none of the adapters would fit properly. I purchased the OTC 8031 kit and it worked perfectly.

Thanks Glen, I saw that kit but i was hoping not to spend that much. Wonder if i could just buy the large frame press and then borrow a loaner tool for the adaptors

Then why not just get the loaner tool to do it, and not buy anything?

from what I've read on different forums is that the loaner tool you get at parts store aren't the large frame and won't work on our trucks. Can anyone confirm that?

That was the problem I ran into. Before I began the project I was assured they had what I needed under their tool loan, but when it came time to do the work, no one could provide me with a kit that would work. I tried AutoZone, Pep Boys, O'Reilly's and Napa. It was putting me way behind schedule just trying to get them to provide me with a tool they said they could provide. I just gave up and ordered the OTC kit.

Using the setup I listed above I was able to get the actual borrowed press from autozone to work...it took a little trial and error to find the right combination of adapters but worked no problem

I recently paid a local shop to install DynaTrac BJs on my '05. This was kind of a last minute upgrade/repair before a long trip and I had no time to do it myself (even if I had wanted to). I'm glad I paid them because the old ones were so difficult to remove that it supposedly took two guys and a torch to get them out. Shop owner told me that his press was bending.

A nice tip for doing balljoints:

Freeze 'em. They will shrink ever-so-slightly and make installation a bit easier.
