Strangest thing yet...
Spent Friday evening and today running sweep at the Prescott Rally. Sometime this morning, a piece of steel was kicked up off the course by the left front tire. It punctured the fuel tank about 3" above the skid. It wasn't a stream, just a fast drip. I carry Permatex Fuel Tank epoxy in my kit, something I've used several times over the years, and even tho it says it won't work on plastic tanks, it does. So after an hour of curing time, we completed 4 more stages of the rally.
As sweep, we follow the course closing car at a pretty fair clip. Great fun on a closed road knowing you have no on coming traffic. Recovered four cars - one had hit a tree at 50 or 60, the drivers were fine due to the cage, seats, and harness.

You're lucky that was all the damage. Ran over a piece of broken leaf spring with my 2G. Hit it with the LF tire. The tire kicked it up and it stuck in the fender just behind the cab. It put a nice crease in the fuel tank.

Yeah, I got to witness some carnage on the I-90 NYS thruway, from a leaf spring. Car in front of me hit it & it got launched skywards. Came down & stuck in the hood/engine of a corvette behind us. It was a convertible. He was lucky.
Re: Strangest thing yet...
There was a State Trooper here that had a chunk of truck spring come through the windshield, partition and rear seat and still managed to make a pretty good "out" dent in the trunk.

Holy crap.
Tank alone is $749.00, pump is $333.00, and they guestimated 4 hours labor. I'll submit it to the insurance co. and see how it goes.

Sorry about the damage
Rally races are fun to volunteer at. I often help out at the 2 "local" rallies here in California, High Desert Trails and Gorman.

Even more fun to drive. I used to run the occasional Monte Carlo rally in my BMW 2002 in the early 70s, back when you could use your daily driver and still be sort of competitive and have a ball. Last one I ran started at midnight at the Rose Bowl and ended next morning at Laguna Seca. Lots of cars wound up in ditches on the central coast and the Highway Patrol was not too pleased with any of it. Shortly after I was warned by the CHP at one of the accident sites, my BMW wound up sideways in a creek. Biggest worry was that one of the following cars would try to take the same line while were were extricating the BMW. Pulled into the parking lot at Laguna Seca with smoking brakes and a massive headache, but I got to watch Denis Hulme and Peter Revson dicing flat out in their Group 7 McLarens. Wow, what a show!Rally races are fun to volunteer at.

Re: Strangest thing yet...
I did OK chasing the rally cars, kept the closing car in sight, even after 11.5 miles. I know the volunteers got a kick out of seeing a FS truck at 65 to 70 MPH. I do have the advantage of knowing the roads very well tho.

Funny.... At the races I help out at, the chief EMT runs a PW... and he's been known to be clocked at times better than some of the competitors.....

They won't guarantee the work without it. I guess it's common to crack the plastic lines.
