Platinum or better spark plugs?

Post by Sumbeach84 » Sat Aug 27, 2016 7:41 am

09 with a 2nd gen 5.7 Hemi. I know they come stick with copper plugs I've heard you can't switch to platinum or iridium plugs? Something about they don't run right or can cause check engine lights. Doesn't make sense to me but I'm sure someone has done it. Any input would be appreciated I'm def way over due she's got a nice stumble on hard acceleration. So coppers? Or best recommendation

It's been my experience that there's no performance gain to be had from fancy plugs, copper or platinum etc is more about plug change intervals than anything. Mopar cheapie plugs are ngk LZFR5C-11 which are copper core plated and have nickel electrodes. When I bought my truck (09 2nd owner) it had e3 triple electrode plugs in it and it ran fine for months before I changed plugs. There was no discernible difference between them and the ngk.

Highest recommendation is to stay with the factory champion plugs.

We had major discussions about this over on Brand X forum. Majority opinion was to stick with OEM recommended plugs and change them at recommended intervals. Our interval is short compared to most other brands, so degradation isn't a problem. Some tried different plugs and actually switched back to OEM due to performance issues. E3s didn't fare well, IIRC.

Just to clarify, stick with stock plugs and oem changing interval. Champions used to be oem but they've switched to ngk for the factory plugs now, at least for 09 and up hemis. The ngk LZFR5C-11 is the mopar oem plug for your truck. I'm sure the champions used on earlier trucks would be just fine though.

Didn't know they switched to the ngk!! Thx for the update. thats what happens when your last pw was an 06.

Fortunately I haven had to change the spark plugs in this truck for 340k km now.

I changed my stock factory plugs @ 41,000 miles. Plug gap was .050 on old plugs. I used Champion double platinum, just so i don't have to change em every 30-40k. New ones are gaped to .044 & anti-siezed. No noticeable difference in the way it runs or gas mileage/or lack there of !

I did the cheaper Iridiums of Rock auto, ran the same after, been 2 years and no codes or issues.

It was $20 more for better plugs.

Like everyones says the stock plugs are what the hemi likes most.

+1 for stock plugs and stock interval.
I run the nice Iridium ones in my moto, but that only needs one plug, and I change it every year or two.

Plugs do need to be changed out periodically though.

Stock plugs at 60K miles here. Works fine. 150K+ on the engine, smooth as butter. You'll begin to notice a slight idle irregularity if you go to 70K...

I only do what the majority of the 4 voices in my head tell me to. In most cases, I ignore two of them because one doesn't speak English, and I suspect the other is talking to someone else.

Trucks got 120k on it now I've had it for about 15k. No idea on maintenance of it but it's got a stumble under hard accel which is often with my driving habits lol. What can I say I love the sound of straight pipes lol
