70MPH Vibration on 2016 PW

Post by Chromolykid » Sun May 01, 2016 5:13 pm

2016 PW with 4,200 miles. Mods include exhaust, wheels and tires, 35" BFG's that have balancing beads instead of traditional weights (supposed to be better but I'm not sold yet). Going down the freeway at 70 I get a vibration. Not in the steering wheel, but in the seat. To my butt it FEELS like a wheel out of balance, but it seems unlikely with the balancing beads. Goes away at 65 and 75, only thing I can figure is driveshaft somehow out of balance? Anybody else experience this on a newer truck?

Did it do that before you did the mods?
It's probably the beads.

Try rotating the tires, and see if it feels different.

My stock Duratrac's had the exact same feeling, but from 68-75mph. When I took it in to the dealer, they said two (2) of my tires had excessive road force (out of round). The most extreme of them was 95lbs of road force which was the highest they had ever measured. They replaced all four (4) tires with new BFG K02s (35x12.50x17) free of charge.

They would have put new Duratrac's back on it, but I do not like their performance on the highway and rain. The KO2s perform just as well off-road for me, but with much better performance in wet weather and quieter.

Weird. Hope you get it figured out. Fwiw I've been using dynabeads to balance my toyo mt's in both 35" and 37" for a few years and never had a problem.

Not sure if you heppen to know anyone with a 3/4 ton truck with more street friendly tires, but if so i would go through the little hassle of swapping tires and going for a drive. That will at least throw the tires out of the equation if it still does it. If the vibe goes away, then you know its just the stock tires (which people complain all the time about causing vibrations).

It's not a Balance issue if it goes away and comes back. Balance issue would be there all the time. It's a road force issue as described above. See it a lot here at work. Anything in a LT tire about 30 so is ok get much higher than that and you'll feel it. Passenger car tires are even less

My truck has something very similar going on and it's completely stock (The truck has slightly less than 3 k miles on it). To me, it feels like a tire balance issue because of the frequency of the vibration and the fact that it occurs at a specific speed.

Edit: I should add that on my truck, the vibration is completely consistent

My 2010 has had one about the same speed since day in. Goes away about 77-78, comes back at 95 until about 115 then goes away again. Doesn't matter what tire.

My 16 has about the same miles on it as yours and doesn't do it, but it still has the stock Goodyears on it.

The 07 has newer KO2's on it and they seem to be prone to flat spotting after sitting for about two weeks where the Goodyears don't or the older KO's didn't.

Hard to say what it is without trying things.

Loose the bids and balance them properly. It's snake oil.

Thanks for the input guys. Those who blame the beads, do you have any specific reason or just don't like them?
Oddly enough, on my drive home last night the ride smoothed out and seemed perfect. Could it be that the beads sometimes do not always balance properly? A driveshaft imbalance would certainly be consistent and tend to get worse at higher speeds. Interesting that others have experienced the same issue. When it had Duratracs on it, the occasional vibration was still there but not as pronounced. I'll be rotating the tires soon and see if that makes a difference. Definitely feels like it's coming from the rear.

The 37s I just put on mine seemed out of balance at certain speeds also, but I think I've figured out it's the shitty roads around here, because on the newer 4 lane it's smooth at every speed, maybe a slightly wiggle around 55, but on other older asphalt roads it has a serious butt wiggle at the same speeds but only in that one section of bad road, smoothes out right after the road gets smoother.

I had the beads on another truck. They worked fine for a while. However, they started clumping together, and caused all sorts of hell. I had the tire shop that suggested them remove them, and balance properly with weights. No more issues.

Mine has a vibration at 70mph as well. I've rotated the tires and it still has the same issue.

Interesting. I was just noticing today that my truck has a slight shimmy around 70mph. It's the same age and miles. I was beginning to think I might have gotten some mud inside one of the rear wheels, but it only seems to occur at 70mph.

I'm beginning to wonder if it's not the front drive shaft. There was an issue with the new style front drive shaft where it would vibrate at high speed. I know that there were some on another forum that replaced it with the earlier style from the 3g's and it had solved the issue. Perhaps you could remove the front drive shaft and take it for a spin and see what happens.

My 2015 had a vibration in the same speed range. I just replaced the duratracs with new Toyo AT2's and the truck is now smooth at all speeds.
