6.4 sound on acceleration

Post by killayaw » Tue Apr 05, 2016 5:11 pm

Hey all,

Just got my 2015 power wagon, and when I accelerate I hear what sounds like a small exhaust manifold leak. It's not a tick or a ping. It doesn't sound like metal hitting against metal. It sounds like those big old V8s in large vans that kind of made a sputtering sound (like an exhaust manifold leak) when you put the pedal to the floor. Just wondering if anyone else hears this upon acceleration? I took it to the dealer, and they said it sounded normal. However, the sound is more pronounced when the engine is cold (again like I would expect with an exhaust manifold leak). I'll probably drop it off overnight for them to listen to again, but thought I would ask here as well.

All my previous vehicles have been 4 or 6 cylinders, so perhaps this sound is normal for the V8s?

Thanks!

Sounds are hard to describe. But, an exhaust leak usually has a "putt putt putt" (think golf putt, not put) sound to it. I'd be surprised if your 6.4 has a leak already. But my previous 2010 had two exhaust manifold bolts break. And apparently common on the 5.7L Hemi.

I wouldn't describe it as a put put sound. Sorta of like a throaty click? It sure is hard to describe. It's not there during idle.

I wonder if it's anything like what mine sounds like, which is absolutely much more pronounced when cold and when accelerating when cold:

I'm thinking that the 6.4's just sound that way. After I got my truck I've noticed that sound, for example, in TFL Trucks ramp test with a PW and a Raptor. In that video, you can hear a bit of the same noise as my truck makes

That's the sound! Funny how we describe it differently. Mine is no where that pronounced at cold idle, but that is definitely it. Thanks.

From what I understand it is all HD Hemi Rams. My 2012 does it. It has always done it. Dealers will say it's normal. You really can notice it next to a wall with the windows down. There is a thread here some where about it.
Not sure the answer. But you aren't alone. I have a video of mine somewhere.

What octane are you running?

I only do what the majority of the 4 voices in my head tell me to. In most cases, I ignore two of them because one doesn't speak English, and I suspect the other is talking to someone else.

Your factory muffler has a silly spring loaded flap in it. At idle it's closed and opens up as exhaust goes through it harder. It can whistle and tick. Change your muffler and it's gone away.

Already removed the stock muffler. That's not it.

To the best of my knowledge, it's normal. My 2016 does it, and so do all the other 6.4 trucks I've heard. Just the Hemi-tick, would be interesting to know what exactly causes it though.
