Interchangeability of engines
Interchangeability of engines
Hi,
I am looking for advice with respect to what engines are interchangeable and will work as a replacement for the 5.7 in my 2005. It looks like any 2002 to 2008 hemi from a truck will work, but it seems that engines from cars will not work (at least not easily). Are the engines in the 1500 series the same? Any advice as to what will or will not work?
Thanks for any assistance.

Re: Interchangeability of engines
Yes, I've read some things about that. Some say you need to plug MDS off and others say it just doesn't work if your wiring/computer isn't connected or made to run it.

That's what I'm thinking. In 05 they put one in so should be a pretty easy bolt in swap.

I know 1500's have an EGR valve and depending on the year MDS 2500's don't.Dodger wrote:Hi,

Re: Interchangeability of engines
If you can't find a rebuilt hemi from an '05, your best bet is to buy the engine/tranny/ecu complete from the breaker or donor vehicle. If it was me, I'd rebuild yours so you know exactly what you have.

Re: Interchangeability of engines
Yes a Hellcat or an SRT-10 would be nice but I'm not a wealthy man. I might be able to afford the stick on lettering though! I've been informed that all the hemi engines are the same (cars, trucks, SUVs), from '02 to '08 (except that some have MDS) and should bolt right in. All I need to do is use my front timing cover assembly and add my accessories. Guys are saying the MDS isn't an issue as it will just not operate if you don't have the right computer/wiring, to run it. Apparently the MDS can be electronically disabled (using a programmer?) on engines that have it. As for rebuilding my own engine, it isn't re-buildable. Why would it be better to buy the engine, trans and ECU together? I thought there was something special about the PW's ECU..."softening the pedal" when in 4 LO?

Re: Interchangeability of engines
If you get the entire setup, it's already good to go. That's the easiest way to do a swap.
If you can use any hemi, get one from a 2500 so it doesn't have the MSD to start with.

I'd do it in a heartbeat if I could afford it and ran across one. But would the tranny hold it is the question. I want to bump mine some with a cam, throttle body, headwork, exhaust but afraid of the transmission....

I've got the G56. If it can handle the torque of the Cummins, it should be good. It would be awesome to be able to light them 1st thru 4th!Will wrote:I'd do it in a heartbeat if I could afford it and ran across one. But would the tranny hold it is the question. There are solutions for those of us with the auto. There's sharadon for the 545rfe and commercial powertrain for both the 5 and 6 speeds. Prices range from 2-6k depending on what you want, with the best being good all the way up to 900hp so I'm told.

Re: Interchangeability of engines
The G56 in a HEMI is slightly different then the G56 in a cummins. And the higher hp cummins guys are swapping to a NV5600 after they explode the G56 case. Granted, they are making 800+ RWHP.
But spinning tires through the first 3 gears is fun......

Re: Interchangeability of engines
Thanks for the responses. I am going with a 6.1 short block with ported/polished 5.7 heads and a Scud cam. I'll be using 6.1 fuel injectors and plan on using the stock intake/throttle body at least for now. I was looking for headers too, but from what I can see none of the long-tubes will fit an '05 and some things I've seen seem to indicate that shorties aren't really much improvement over the stock exhaust manifolds. Any recommendations on headers that will fit an '05?

I'll try to let you know about any difficulties I run into, etc. or if it is really straight forward. My understanding is it is pretty much just a drop-in as the blocks have the same exterior dimensions.

Re: Interchangeability of engines
I think the only hang ups are deciding if you want to use the 6.1 heads and intake and have to move your accessories and add an electric fan or use the adapter plate to use your truck intake or just port out your 5.7 heads. And tuning it which hemifever could probably do.

Re: Interchangeability of engines
It's been a long time. Took all this time to get the engine. I have that sitting on a pallet now and wanted to ensure I had any/all parts I might want before getting it installed. With respect to the TTI headers, I called TTI and the person told me that "the earliest Power Wagon their headers will fit is 2006." I asked him if they would fit a 2005 and he said that they would not. I've searched a lot on the net and I am still not sure which long tubes will actually fit a 2005. What is different about a 2005?RustyPW wrote:TTI headers for a 2500 will fit. you have to give them a call.Dodger wrote:Thanks for the responses.
