Hey all took a video if the intermediate shaft after the steering column. It appears it is a dowel encased in rubber holding creating a rubberized buffer between the two shafts this video was taken with the engine off and not very much force allows the bushing to deflect a lot. A guy on cummins forum decided to install to pieces of trimmed rubber hose around the dowel and then used a gear clamp around the whole thing to keep the rubber in place. That very well be what my problem is, next on my list was the gear box but will check this out now. My steering is predictable but does have more play in it that I would like.

Edit* I just checked and, oh yeah, I have enough play that the pin has worn shiny spots on both sides of the collar. I will be correcting this situation this weekend.

Awsome will let me know how this goes! I'll be trying something similar also. I know while my trucks off the input to the box has a small amount of play but I was surprised I had this much deflection in this joint as well.

The stock shaft on my truck was a 3 piece unit. Each piece was rubber isolated from the next. A REAL issue when rubber gets worn or cracks & dry rots.

Steering gear and shaft were pretty worn on mine, believe that was the cause of the death-wobbles I got. (Ball joints, track bar, etc all replaced and I still had wobble problems.)

Shop I had do it said "it's a bigger problem with the diesels", but admitted they do a lot more work on diesels than gas pickups.

A steering box brace will help the box play a lot mule make this box last longer as well.

I haven't forgotten about this, I tried a few different scrap pieces of hose I had laying around and dont have the correct size. One day I'll stop by a store and pick up a piece.

I was thinking about just cutting the hose vertically and rolling it inside there till she's good and snug.

I just checked out my steering shaft just inside the firewall. I don't have that pin with rubber bushing. I've got two set screws/bolts on each side of the U joint that lock onto the steering shafts. So I'm good. I'll post pics tonight

Nice the pin might just be the fourth gen trucks I know dodge replaces those a lot for "loose" feeling in the steering as well now

Can also machine a small bushing up to place on one of the two spindles and hold it with a hose clamp and it will fix this weak point also

A couple of weekends ago when I was running switches through the firewall I noticed the "pin" through the steering shaft was off center. As I wiggled the wheel the pin moved from side to side. It took quite a bit of force and I could feel the rubber isolators dampening the movement. Something about it didn't seem right so I went ahead and used airhose to center the pin. The steering never felt loose persay but it did feel dampened. There is now less movement which should be less wear in the steering later.

I just went outside to see if that same little prone failure part is on my brand new 2016 and there it was. The outside housing appears to be about 1/8'' thick then the pin goes through some rubbery bushing within the housing. I can see it moving and this is a brand new and the part looks different so maybe RAM corrected it. My steering is so tight I can rest my wrist on the wheel and never move it for my two hour trips to Bruni. I guess sooner or later this pin/bushing will be a problem so I'll keep an eye on it. I bought a short $10 air hose from Amazon and it fit perfectly (tight fit). I only used about 6".

Thought this thread was dead. Early on I used this:

TEKTON 46332 3/8-Inch I.D. by 3-Foot 250 PSI Rubber Lead-In Air Hose with 1/4-Inch MPT Ends, $8.49 & amazon. Cut the ends, saved them for later, & pounded in about a 4" piece with a small plastic mallet.

I have a 2016 PW and after only a couple thousand miles there is a bunch of play and the truck pulls to the left with the wheel straight. Sometimes it pulls to the right. The dealer told me well what do you expect, you bought a big truck with aggressive tires, theres nothing we can do about it

My 2015 is in for the 7th time since May. This time it has been there since last Thursday. So far they have replaced front wheel bearings tie rods intermediate steering shaft steering box pitman arm drag link track bar and the sway bar because mechanics said plug was corroded. It wanders and clunks when steering at low speeds. Issue started at 29,000 all warranty work at least.
