My new 2015 power wagon

Post by Boomerttl » Fri Apr 10, 2015 12:41 pm

Wish I had my 05 power wagon back, 15 gutless gas guzzler,my 05 would eat this thing up, don't get me wrong it's a nice truck but nice only get you so far in the mud, thanks dodge or ram or who ever you are now you took a bad ass truck and ruined it! Yuppiefied if you will lol,if you are thinking about getting rid of your 3rd gen don't, at least wait to see if they pull ther heads out and make the 16's real power wagons again, and about the gas guzzler comment I wouldn't mind it if the truck had some balls! And why would you put traction control on a truck built for off road? I'm exploring my options for 4:56 gears I think maybe that might make me happy who knows, but very disappointed

I'm not expert but a 7000 pound truck is not my first choice when going in mud. Also traction control is part of the stability control which is required on every vehicle. If you don't like it shut it off, hold the TCS button for 10 seconds in 4wd while stopped and it is shut off up to 45 mph. Give the truck a few miles to break in, when I first drove my truck it seemed gutless but after a few thousand miles the power got much better.

I've got a '15, and it's anything but gutless. Put your foot into it, the computer will learn your driving style. I'm even running 35" tires on mine. No programmer, nothing else added.

Got 3500 miles on it, ya I punch and it comes out of the hole hard and then falls on its face, have you guys had a gen 3? Or is this your first one? And why not put a 7000 pound truck in mud isnt that whats its made for? I don't buy power wagons to drive on the street, I guess the mud tires are for looks? My 05 went just fine in the mud, I guess the next to be said to me is you should of kept your 05 power wagon and yes maybe I should have but it was time for a new truck everything wears out, But I hope y'all are right that it will eventually drop it nuts cause right now not really impressed with its power and gearing, but it does ride like a Cadillac or i mean a Chrysler 300 lol

I have a non power wagon 2500 with 3.73's and I know this is no sports car but it pulls better in from a roll than a stop.
The power wagon has always been geared more towards flexing through rocks and such, so no, it isn't really "built for mud". Those aren't really mud tires either, they are a hybrid between a mud terrain and all terrain, so they are OK in mud, much better than the bfg all terrain that came on the pre-2014, but they still don't clean out near as well as a traditional mud terrain.

Had a 3G 1/2 ton with the 3.92's, so apples to oranges for comparison. Never did have the 3G PW, I wanted one, but with my boys growing, it wasn't really an option. As for the ride, it rides WAY better than my 300c!! Probably cause it's the SRT 8 and rides like a lumber wagon! ;)

They are all around general purpose off road vehicles, but they are more set-up to rock crawl then to blast through mud holes.

Hey man everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

I dont have much of a valuable opinion, especially since I have never owned a power wagon. That being said, I am a little confused about your take on your new truck.

Sounds like you are upset because it is too refined. Like it rides too nice? Seats are too nice? Interior updates are just too nice? That sounds like a good thing to me.

And the traction control thing... a car manufacturer can not produce a vehicle without it anymore. Not much they can do. My jeep has it. I just cut the wires for it and installed a switch to completely shut it off while I'm wheeling (on the Jeep, it does not completely shut off with the button - have to be in 4low). Otherwise, I like it when driving on the road. It functions very well on road (but I did hate it off road).

If it is the gears then upgrade to 4.56's. Or what the hell, jump up to 4.88's or 5.13's or 5.38's. At least you have the choice with the 4 1/2 gens.

The mandatory quad cab with a short box is bullshit IMO, even though that is the style truck I would buy right now. And no manual trans is a bunch of shit too, even though I would probably get the auto right now. I do thing they screwed up there.

Regardless. It is still a badass truck. Just change the few quirks you dont like as you get time and money and be happy with it. After all, you still do have the most capable off road truck that is available to go purchase new off the lot today.

Basically all I said is compared to my 05 this 15 seems gutless, the ride and all the bells and whistles are nice that's why I got the Laramie, I just wish they would left the gearing alone, you know if it ain't broke don't fix it,and yes I'm exploring my options on regearing, but I really don't think a long 7000 pound full size truck makes a great rock crawler either.

I understand what you're saying about the 2005 versus the 2015 in some aspects. Different gearing and a heavier truck make it slower, and being bigger makes it less of an off-road truck compared to the 2005 model. That being said, from the factory there isn't much out there that can compete in stock form with a Power Wagon. As far as I'm concerned the 2013 guys have the best 4th Gen with the upgraded interior and 4.56 gears. I haven't seen enough evidence that the 6.4L is that much of an upgrade, especially with 4.10 gears. If they had stuck with the 4.56 gears we might be having a different discussion. I just hope you can find a way to enjoy your new truck. I'm very happy with my 2012.

I had a 2006 PW and currently have a '15 2500 w/ the 6.4 and 3.73s. To me, it's no comparison. The 06 was great, but the power of the '15 is night and day. I drive like a grandma usually but when I put the pedal to the floor this thing is a like a monster, even with 3.73s. It took a tuner, ported throttle body, and a CAI for my 06 to wake up and it still felt slow. I am however; looking into 4.56 gears. It's about $750 for the gears (8 Lug Truck)and who knows for the actual install maybe $1500.

After warranty is up my 14 will get an aftermarket torqueconverter and hopefully headers also. That will give it the edge I'm looking for! Still really like this truck though.

I still have my 06 with the 6 speed stick. I love it, it's a real truck, not an Escalade with a box on the back. I'm not saying new PW are Escalades, but that seems where new trucks are heading. Can you even get a stick shift anymore ? I don't plan on getting rid of my 06. As far as speed and or acceleration, why would you buy a BIG HEAVY 3/4 TONN 4X4 and throw a bunch of money at it to make it faster ? get one of those Dodge pickups with the V10 I bet it's real fast right out of the box.

I agree Ben. My '07 has the 6sp as well. I have already informed my wife that if I blow up the 5.7 in it I am dropping in a Hellcat! (Even if it cost's 20g's!) Could you imagine a Hellcat with posi, and 4.56's-----I could see it lifting the front end---lol! :excited:

Only with the Cummins can you get a manual transmission.

My 2013 PW is the best truck I've ever had so far. It was fine stock and when I put 35s on it. I put a Hemi Fever tune on it and it's got good power now for a 3/4 ton 7000 lb truck. I've had my truck in deep snow 2' + and mud and haven't had any issues with getting stuck at all. I feel the OP has some nostalgia about his old truck and is bashing his new one for no good reason. I Haven't driven the 14 or 15 PWs but plenty of members on here have them and seem very pleased with them.

Hey OP how bout you ditch that POS "ruined" "15 gutless gas guzzler" "Yuppiefied" Power Wagon. I'll give you 50 cents on the dollar blue book value for it since it's such a big POS. Just so you don't have to deal with it and tarnish the PW name any more.

You seem very upset about your new truck. Why did you buy it then? Lot of money to waste and not be happy when the aftermarket provides parts to build any truck with the same off road features as a power wagon.

That's truly a bummer Boomerttl .
I didn't know any of what I'm about to say when I bought my '05 new , but at that time I thought it was EXACTLY what I wanted for my eighth pickup. After 10yrs. , I have the best looking, worst headlights, least amount of horsepower and torque , plain and simple interior with no type of driving aids or monitors Power Wagon ever built. While some improvements have been made in the last 10yrs. I'll keep mine and I would not trade or sell it for anything .
I'll say one last thing, for the last 10yrs. my choice of any of the offerings for a 3/4 ton truck would be a Power Wagon , regardless of the year .

I had a 04 5.7 2500 with 3:73 gears previous to my 06 diesel(was sold to buy the 15 wagon). The 04 could barely trip out of its own way, I think it would definitely be more punchy off the line with 4:56. I think the auto trans ratios were wrong on the 3rd gens, the MT guys seem to like their 5.7s

The 6.4 I think has more torque "under the curve" as they say that keeps the trans from hunting like my 04 did. there is definitely more to it than 25 hp and 30 lbft.

This week I towed my 8000lb TT 20km and found that it behaved pretty similar to my 06 5.9, I was able to stay in 5th on the highway and had plenty of passing power, I'm sure I'll definately see a difference in the mountains though.

As stated above, "why did you buy it"? That is a large chunk of money to spend on something you don't like. No sympathy here, Ya shoulda done your research.
You have loads more power so buy lower gears, override your Traction Control and shorten your box.....or sell it and drop a v8 in a Lada with air lockers. That should take care of the troublesome" Cadillac ride".
Most guys wished they had your problem so no whining pls.

Everybody is entitled to their own opinion, so I will express mine. Previous truck was 04 Laramie CTD, current truck 15 Laramie PW. When it comes to towing the CTD had much more torque. When it comes to speed the PW has much more acceleration. I bought the PW because of the off road ability, it comes in handy in Alaska. I have not had it in mud yet, only snow and I am highly satisfied with its ability. The PW rides much better than the CTD, so I think I have the best of both worlds, off and on road. Different strokes for different folks. One good thing for the OP, PW's are hard to find so he should have no problem selling his, then somebody else can be happy.

I sure like my '10 4th Gen PW, and it works great for what I need it for. With that said, when I see a 3rd Gen PW they really catch my attention. Best PW ever and that includes the originals.
