Post by John's_05PW » Tue Jul 03, 2012 8:52 pm

Hey guys. I'm new to this site. My name is John and I picked up an 05 PW last Sept. but haven't had too much time with it yet due to being in the military and and being gone. Looking at running 35's on the truck in the near future and was wondering what kind you all like currently running and like the most. Also, are yall having to run a leveling kit to clear 35's without rubbing and if so what kit. Thanks in advance.

I'll be the first of many... welcome aboard! Many of us run 35's with minor rubbing at full lock... some brands worse than others but never a big deal... I run km/2's now but miss my Cooper s/t's..

Welcome. Hide your wallet because once you get time, we will spend your money for you! 35's are no problem on our trucks with only a little rubbing on the control arms. When I ran KM2's they barely rubbed, and now I have Toyo MT's and they rub more significantly (wider and taller tire), but so worth it for the performance they offer vs. my experience with the KM2's.

Are any of yall running a leveling kit? How bad is the rubbing with swaybar unlocked or is the rubbing yall have with it unlocked?

Ken G is running a spacer up front on his 4G.

I have been running 35's for 3 years on my 05. Love them. Currently running Nitto Trail Grapplers and they are the best tire I have run. As folks said the 35's rub the control arms at full lock but who runs at full speed on full lock? Well maybe that is something that PitSlave might do :)

I just upgraded my control arms to Thuren's off-set arms and couldn't be happier, no more rubbing and more control. Might want to look into those as well (see already spending your money) :)

Welcome! Thanks for your service, and for joining us! I run Toyo 35s, no spacer, stock suspension. Like everyone said, rubs the control arms at full lock. No issues off road for us, and many of us use them pretty hard.

Read up on spacers. It sounds like they tend to create steering issues on PWs.

Welcome aboard & big thanks for serving! I'm retired military, myself. Still playing in the game in the Contractor world. I've got a Redilift billet leveling kit on mine with 35" Nitto Trail Grappler MTs....they rub mostly when the rig has the sway bar locked down. Less so when disconnected for wheeling. Love the tires, and the rubbing is just an annoyance. I'll eventually put aftermarket arms on to eliminate that.
Hope to see you out on the trails with the Winch Mob someday! Kick some ass and stay safe if you are headed back downrange again anytime soon. :lockedandloaded:

Thanks guys. I'll be moving to Hill AFB Utah next spring and I'm planning on heading to Moab to see what the truck can do!! Between the Cooper S/T, BFG KM2, and Toyo MT, which one does good for all around driving and wintery conditions?

Welcome to the offical nut house of the :winchmob: Like it was said before. Hide your wallet, chop up your credit card. Because we WILL spend your money for you. :cash: I have run both the 35" Cooper STT's and the Toyo's. Have the Toyo's on now. Both rub at full lock. It's no big thing. As for which tire is best for winter. You're going to get a couple of different opinsions on this. Most MT's need to get siped for better winter perfromance.

The Nittos have some siping....not a whole bunch, but decent, and are Mud & Snow rated. I think the Toyos and Coopers have some siping, too. The KM2s have no siping at all. I had Super Swamper TSL SXs on a Jeep and hand-siped them with a carpet knife and about 3 hours to do 5 tires. It works, but you gotta be real careful. Not as pretty as the job a tire shop can do, but a lot less expensive. I've spent a good bit of time there around SLC and the Wasatch Front.....you might even want to think about tire chains for the tires you get. I plan on getting some that fit 35s. You'll especially want them for any Winter runs up into Little or Big Cottonwood Canyon, or even some of the main roads down toward Moab when a big storm comes through out there in the Rockies! Miss those mountains out there! Best powder skiing in the lower 48!

I run studded Goodyear Duratrac (315/70/17) in the winter. You will not find a better winter tire-----I looked for months. Nothing else is even close! :secret:
As for summer mud tires, there are a pile of really good ones as you have already heard. I run Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ (315/70/17) that I am very happy with.

I had the Goodyear Duratracs at one point and they were an awesome all round tire. Very decent in mud, same for ice. FANTASTIC in snow! They are the most popular tire on all of the oilfield/mining/forestry trucks in Northern Alberta right now. Actually, too popular as far as I am concerned. I wanted to get them for the PW but they were on back order a lot. And due to demand the pricing for them has gone up a lot around here.

Does running a D rated tire over a E have any different effect on our trucks? I ran E rated on my 2500 CTD. I'm not going to do much towing with this truck.

I ran the 35" Cooper STT's D rated before I got the Toyo's. I liked the ride of the Cooper's better then the Toyo's. I also pulled a 35', 8,600 lbs camper with them with no problems. ;) And I got better gas mileage with the Cooper's. :)

From my experience in going from the OEM D range BFG All Terrains to the BFG KM2s in an E load range, I would say yes. The ATs were rated at 3195 lbs @ 65 PSI and the KM2s are rated at 3195 lbs @ 80 PSI. They can carry the same weight, but the E rated KM2s need 15 PSI more to accomplish it. I have found that carries across the board and empty I run higher PSI with the KM2s than I did with the ATs. The result is the Power Wagon had a softer ride with the D range, but the steering and handling is more precise with the KM2s and it it far more stable while towing our fifth wheel.

hello glenn
And how are those 285/75 BFG's holding up? im almost home and want to purchase those exact tires or even the nittos? i like the size as i will be pulling a camp trailer. ive owned plenty of BFG tires and i know they take quite a bit of rotations, but for the price it sounds like a good deal? or would you have gone with the toyos or the nittos now? thanks

Congrats on finding this forum. Lot's of good info on here. I am still contemplating these Dick Cepek Mud Country 35 x 12.5 x 17 now available in load range E. They appear to have the best of all worlds going for them in the reviews I have read.
