Idler Pulley Failure !*@#*!
Idler Pulley Failure !*@#*!
Well, I knew I was on borrowed time with my idler pulley's but I had to push it a few more days because it stopped chirping the other morning. Well should have listened to my gut and changed them at home. Instead on the way home from dinner tonight on the interstate (288 for those in Richmond), my lower idler pulley gave up the ghost.
Here are a few pictures for you. I changed both idler pulleys on the side of the road and put on a new belt. What fun
I do have to say the new ones from Advance are a much better design.

Re: Idler Pulley Failure !*@#*!
Seems any time they are subject to muddy water. Also you will need this as well. The service manual has the wrong diagram in it. Thank God for my tablet and internet on my phone, otherwise I might still be struggling with the belt

Re: Idler Pulley Failure !*@#*!
Thanks! Well, so far my truck has been fine, except that the loose gas cap idiot light went on, followed by the malfunction indicator light. Otherwise, the truck is doing great mechanically. Getting the lights taken care of at the dealer tomorrow, since it's still under warrantee. I guess a new gas cap and a computer reset.

Been there... done that... twice! both were with my old pw. I keep spares in my toolbox now and as it was already said muddy water does it every time. I even had it happen once in my Durango after off roading...

Re: Idler Pulley Failure !*@#*!
Remember mine was chirping after the saturday run at Rausch. That was one of the main reasons that I didn't want to go out on sunday. Thankfully I made it home and got them changed before one of them exploded. I'm definitely keeping spares in my tool box from now on!! Great job on the side of the road fix Peter!!

Re: Idler Pulley Failure !*@#*!
My idler exploded on me last year and it too took out the serpentine belt. I've learned that after the pulley squeaks for a while then suddenly goes quiet that it's about to explode...wish I would have had spare parts with me that time. I replaced my idlers up in PA before the drive back. I've still got a squeak somewhere in the belt system. It's either the alternator or AC compressor

Re: Idler Pulley Failure !*@#*!
Yeah I have a second set I purchased to keep in my too box too. I just need to get a back-up belt. Glad you made it home before it exploded. Really glad it is such a simple fix.06powerwagon06 wrote:Remember mine was chirping after the saturday run at Rausch. That was one of the main reasons that I didn't want to go out on sunday. Sounds like its time for an engine cleaning and some fluid film. Hopefully it isn't your power steering pump like VA_Wagon_ManMSparks909 wrote:My idler exploded on me last year and it too took out the serpentine belt. Re: Idler Pulley Failure !*@#*!
They do not like water. I had to replace both idler pulleys shortly after this water crossing:
2006 Power Wagon - Carli ball joints, control arms and adjustable track bar; T-style steering conversion; Bilstein 5100 shocks; Bilstein steering stabilizer; Dodge Off Road steering brace; AirLift Loadlifter 5000 Ultimate air springs with Daystar cradles; Toyo Open Country A/T II Extreme LT285/75R17; Transfer Flow 30 gallon refueling tank/toolbox combination.

Re: Idler Pulley Failure !*@#*!
I hear you, I have to replace mine all the time. Its like its part of offroading......lol.
I'm still waiting on my Power Steering Pump to come in.
Pdavey, please make SURE you don't have any "spaghetti" wrapped around any of your other pulleys. That's exactly how my PS pump got ruined. It was wrapped so tight around the backside, I just didn't see it. Get a flashlight and make triple sure there isn't any belt left anywhere........
