Power Wagon Top Speed?

Post by 04Ram2500Hemi » Wed Jul 24, 2013 10:52 pm

So I know that the Power Wagon isn't built for speed, but I was wondering if on an open road in a safe location has anybody checked to see just how fast these pigs will go? I often wonder what the top speed is for these trucks? I also wonder if there is a difference between the 3rd Gen and the 4th Gen when it comes to speed? Or how about a 2012 with the 6spd versus a 2011 with a 5spd? I also wonder if the 6.4L Hemi and 4.10 gears will offer a higher top speed?

Anyway- just some random thoughts. If you have any thoughts feel free to share.

I got mine up to about 93 or so accidentally. I was zipping along, not even passing anybody (apparently I was in the midst of a pack of fast movers) and felt a little bit of a vibration that didn't seem familiar, was wondering what it was until I looked at the speedo and saw how fast I was going! That's the fastest I've gotten mine up to. I know my Chevy DMAX I had was limited from the factory at 93mph (scared me when I hit it in the DMAX, the limiter hits STRONG, I thought something was wrong with my truck since the limiter cuts on so aggressively!) so I wouldn't be surprised if Dodge similarly limits our trucks at somewhere in that area of speed. (especially Power Wagons since we have a less road oriented tread to our standard tires)

They are governed at 100mph (160km/h) at around 3000rpm in my 2012. Ungoverned, I have buried the speedo (120mph) in my old 2010 2500 w/ hemi & 4.10s.

The fastest I brought mine at was around 105 mph on worn stock suspension. The tires started to give a small vibration, but other than that, I was comfortable at that speed. I had it in tow haul mode and was taching around 4500 IIRC. Held it there for a good 10 min until I backed it down to 90 for another 20 or so min. The funny thing was my fuel economy seemed to plateau at about 12mpg even though I was over 80 mph.

I never topped out my 05 in stock form, but in current form, the highest I've had mine is:

-109 mph in the dirt in 2WD
-102 mph in 4WD
-Somewhere north of 120 mph on the highway in 2WD with no fuel cutoff. Not quite sure how much north, but it felt like a good 5-7 mph. I don't remember what the RPM's were at, but I don't think she could do anymore than that. She was running smooth as silk and no vibration or craziness whatsoever.

And this is with a 5.5" lift, 37" M/T tires and a Superchips Flashpaq, all of which could make quite a difference on these numbers up or down.

Mine topped out at 100 during a pass of a tandem semi. Scared me to death with on coming traffic and the damn thing feeling like it hit that proverbial electronic wall. I don't cut it that close anymore now that I know that I have no ability to push harder if I need to. I may eliminate that top speed thing but I never go that fast anyway so I may never find time to do it LOL. I stay at 70 or 75 mostly.

Seems like it gets to 85 pretty quick, and slowly pulls past that to 90 or so. Perhaps it's the elevation, or the weight, but I've never seen anything close to 100.
I'm just along for the ride...

So it sounds like the general consensus is that the truck should be governed around 100mph from the factory. I agree that I don’t have a whole lot of need to go much over 80mph as a rule in my truck, but I was just curious what these big pigs could do. Without the truck governed I think they would push 120mph, but I think that might be a bit spooky.

Highest I've hit is 105 on the freeway. Didn't seem like my '05 had much more to give past that. Maybe if it'd been flatter.
