545 RFE 2nd Gear Whine
Hey guys, anyone have any experience on having 2nd gear whine on the 545rfe trans? My buddys 06 ram and my dads 2013 Charger RT both do it, and with the charger its very noticeable. The noise only happens when you are accelerating from a stop so its in the standard 2nd gear, not 2nd prime on kickdown. In first and 3rd-5th there is no noise as well so its not rear end noise or from the rest of the drivetrain. Thanks for any info guys

Re: 545 RFE 2nd Gear Whine
Now that I think of it I've occasionally noticed a whine from the mid-front of the truck under light to moderate acceleration. I've never noticed it to be at the same RPM and I felt like it was a driveshaft noise, but only occasionally and no high rpm issues so trans would make sense. I don't know man. 545's don't tend to blow up very often, check the fluid level and run with it!

You could do a fluid and filter change to see if the whine is still there. If you do it. Make sure you use the factory filters. There is 2 of them. The aftermarket ones are crap.

Re: 545 RFE 2nd Gear Whine
I have a slight whine when shifting from 4th into 5th and the RPMS drops, when driving between 40-50 mph, it has been that way for almost 3 years but has not changed. I have read that a bad fluid pump, the 545RFE has 2, can cause a whine a clogged filter can decrease fluid flow and cause a similar problem.
I sent a private message to a user on http://www.cumminsforum.com called "TransEngineer" who's a Mopar Transmission Tech Specialist some time back and got this replay.
"Realize that some slight gear whine is normal in any transmission. It probably will be expensive to fix, since any time you have to remove the trans and tear it down, it entails about 8 hours of labor plus parts.
If I were you, I would wait on trying to fix the transmission. I would just keep driving it, and if it does eventually fail (or get significantly worse), worry about it then."
I haven't done anything else and so far, so good. You could do a fluid and filter change and call it a day.
