Camming the PW

Post by TrueCowboy426 » Mon Jan 14, 2013 8:07 pm

Well I wasn't going to do this, but since I finished my big block Dakota build I've been looking for something else to play with. It's winter up here so taking the Dak out to play would be useless, and I have no desire to build on my Jeeps and I'm still a ways out on finishing collecting parts for the 6BT swap in my W100, so that leaves me with the PW. The PW is plenty off road capable for me (I only need RR to be happy) so that leaves me with the desire for more power/torque. As I've posted a couple times, I've bought a KRC 210x (actually 2 of them now) cam for the truck and 6.1 springs and pushrods are also on the way. Hopefully I'll have a weekend shortly that I can tear the truck down to install, but just have to play it by ear for now. Should give the truck a good bump in low rpm power, and give it a pretty good lope with the 108 LSA. It will be a force to be reckoned with this coming pulling season. Just have to line up someone to tune it and I should be good to go.

Lower cam in the pic is the one going in the PW. The upper cam is damaged/wore to the point I won't put it in my DD truck. Project truck I don't care about I would though.

Why is the old cam so worn that we can see it in the pics ? What kind of oil did you use & how many miles on it ?

The bad cam was never in my truck. When I bought it I knew I was taking a chance as they guy pushed a lot of nitrous and turned a lot of rpm. I think in the case of this cam, the PO didn't really take a lot of care of the truck, and this cam damage is the result of neglect. Thin oil, lot of rpm and heat I think is what caused the lifter rollers to gall the cam. I don't even want to know what condition the rest of his engine is in!

Sorry guys this has taken a lot longer to get done than I planned. My biggest problems was the valve spring compressor tool has been on BO for over 2 months , but it finally came in today. I just need to get a hold of a tuner (I think I will use Johan @ Diablo, or Sean/Hemifever), and find time to tear the truck down. I can't wait to get it in, as I've just gotten too used to the torque this truck makes, and I want more!! Plus my big block Dakota has given me the desire to make the PW just as fun to drive as it. I know this will never be a race truck with this trans and weight, but it feels good to take down ricers, Chevy's, Fords, etc. in a big ass heavy truck, and the real reason is to get the torque band down where I can really use it towing and offroad.

From my understanding the KRC210X cam has been discontinued. Do you know of any new cams that share the same specs? I've been tossing around the idea of camming my PW as well. I want to get a set of headers installed first. These Toyo's took some pep away from my Hemi's step! I need more low end.

You are correct that this cam is no longer made, but if you want a KRC210X, just print off the cam card I posted and either call it into Crane, or email them and they can grind you this exact cam. For something comparable, a Sidewinder, or Comp 260 is similar with a little wider LSA so no need for custom tuning like I will be required to have. But I want all I can get for torque so this was my personal opinion of the best option without getting a custom grind done.

Sounds good to me. I may go this route when I get some more $ saved up. I'm getting headers soon (hopefully) so the cam would compliment those nicely. I am thankful for my G56. I was still able to tow 6,000 today easily, even with the new Toyo's. 5th gear, around 60mph and let it do its thing.

If all goes well, today I will start the cam install. I did a quick drive video to get a baseline how the truck performed while aggressively getting up to speed, so hopefully the after vid shows an improvement. Stay tuned for pics of the teardown and install.....

I thought I got pretty far for only working about an hour so far. Pretty warm out right now so just getting out of the sun for a bit. Sure is a pain having to do motor work on a truck this high and awkward. Next up is valve covers/rocker and get the timing cover off. Hope to get the cam in yet tonight, and start on the reassembly and spring swap tomorrow.

Old cam is out, and the new cam is in!! Just have to get the timing cover back on tomorrow, and swap to 6.1 springs and get it all back together and she will be ready for a road test. All and all, this is a super easy swap, and I would have no hesitation about diving into another one.

Surprisingly to me, the old cam is in really good shape, but I only have ~105K miles on the truck

Sorry no pics of new cam going in as I was too hurried to get it in before it got too dark, and I didn't want to risk nicking the cam bearings.

The hemi lives again!!! Had a few hiccups today, first was just stupidity on my part, and the second was having to pull the valve cover off again to reseat a pushrod. I don't have a tune for it it yet, but the little idling I did with it sounds beastly. I know it will tame down with a tune, but it has the old muscle car lope to it.

I know this is not very scientific, and this is not why I did the cam swap, but this is the pre cam acceleration run. Hopefully tomorrow I can do an after vid to show the improvement. Just a little chirp into 4th on the second run, we shall see what post cam has in store.

Idle vid of the cam. Audio is terrible and doesn't do the sound justice. Overall I am very pleased with the performance even though my tune is still way off.

WOW>.. That sounds great!!!!!!!!!!! I see that you have the common Hemi" tick" I got it in mine too LOL.. Seems to go away when you bounce it off the governor LOL... How is the difference in power/torque? Was it worth the time??

Sounds better in person. That tick you hear isn't all the motor. I have very little of the Hemi tick, and it's actually a lot less since the 6.1 springs and pushrods. What you are hearing in the trans. The manual trans guys will know (Twin, 06Wagon) that if you lug these truck the trans "rattles" quite a bit, and with the lope the trans is chattering from rotating under power, then the motor "skips" taking up all the backlash in the trans, once the motor hits again it takes up all the slack making a pretty loud chatter/tick you hear.

As for power, my tune is still a ways off, but it definitely pulls a lot harder. I haven't done a hard acceleration yet, but the few rolls I have done on it, the clutch isn't liking the extra torque it's making and is slipping pretty bad with spirited driving and shifting. Without going into numbers, my truck used to hit a brick wall at well above the speed limit, and now it will pull hard right over to the end of the speedometer. I was shocked myself how hard it kept pulling right to the limit, and it would have kept going if I had the guts to trust the MT's at those speeds, and I value my license too much to loose it doing something the truck wasn't meant to do.

Would I do it again? Absolutely! Hell I would do it just to tear into the motor, as I love doing work like that.

Nice. Yea. I do notice that the Hemi goes dead after about 4500 rpm's,,, I am glad to hear that there is a "fix" for that.

Hmmm...might do this along with some shorty headers once I get some more $$$! I've lost a ton of grunt with the 37" Toyo's. The Hemi feels pretty anemic now.

Guess those of us with the VCT motor are outta luck on this one. I'd really like to hear a little lope in the motor...
I'm just along for the ride...
