2nd Chance PW

Post by RamGentry » Tue Dec 01, 2015 9:27 am

A little background on my PW adventure. Former Ram and Rubicon owner that always wanted the PW but couldn't find one that I could afford until this past fall. I'm a habitual CL lurker and found a former BP PW in Az for $15,945. Bought a one-way ticket, spent 7 hours negotiating, and drove in 1600 miles home to MN to the tune of $14,100. Mechanically its in excellent shape. The interior/exterior is rough around the edges but I'm slowly restoring her, giving her a 2nd chance! Heres my budget build:
Heres day one with my new PW, you can kind of see how the bumper is extended out from their goofy bracket.

Image

my old man admiring the flex (he came along for the ride, nice having him along)

Image

First mod, well actually delete, is to get rid of all the extra crap (this was actually a lot of work)...

Image
Image

New taillights $70(one was cracked the other very scratched) and new tailgate $270. Ebay and CL are my friends Bumper is on temporarily as they cut the hitch mounting brackets

Next up is to change some fluids...oil, coolant, diffs, and transfer case:

And I couldnt resist putting new shoes on her. 4wheelparts had a smoking deal on 35x12.5x17 KO2s $993 and I found some H2 wheels for $220

Fixing the bumper...This was also a lot of work. New hitch that actually has bumper brackets still attached $200  This required unbolting the bed, lifting it up, and sliding out the old hitch and replacing it with the new. Once everything was bolted back down we hammered out the dent in the bumper as much as possible and aligned it the best we could with a sledge hammer. I also cut my exhaust tip back so I cant pinch it. I will be replacing the spare with another H2 spare/KO take off

Now its onto the interior, total gut and replace. I found seats off ebay $free after a shipping and stain disaster. I recovered the seats with factory replacements $200, this was also a lot of work. Hog clips  'nuff said

Interior is 90% done. I need to add seatbelt buckles to the rear and would like to buy some fold flat covers for the dog. Found out I need to swap my old front seat buckles onto the new seats for the electronics to work even though they have the same plugs :thppt: so the front seats have to come out one more time. Forgot to but the middle seat seat belt so i can do that when the fronts are out. Next up, slush mats and fold flats and the interior is done.

Hello RamGentry, nice work it looks good so far, do those stock hubcaps fit with the H2 wheels I think they do? Was that vehicle in some deep water it looks very muddy inside? Do all the PW goodies still work lockers, sway-bar disconnect, winch, etc.?

Nope, stock ram hub caps will not fit without some modification. Since the H2 wheels are painted and my old wheels were chrome im looking for a painted set of ram caps to modify. If you are talking about H2 center caps I dont know becuase I dont like the look of them and didnt try.

Nope the vehicle was in the desert. No rust or mud just real fine reddish dust EVERYWHERE! It took a while to clean out but I didnt take an "after" pic. Underneath is just more reddish dirt, its not event that thick just need to get the quarter car wash power washer under it.

Yep, mechanically shes good including lockers, sway bar, and winch. Those were the first things i tested and then I drove her for almost 28 hours straight from AZ to MN w/out any hiccups.

love seeing the truck getting whipped back into shape. Nothing more rewarding than taking something that is a little abused and making it nice again.

Husky Liners front and rear (fold flat load floors on the way)

I dont know what year you have but my 2010 didnt come with a cabin air filter. Turns out the cover and filter from a 2010 caliber with fit in place of a cut out. Heres a link to the video I used https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8GICHMBzSw

Auto start in the truck and it's awesome! Really helps in the winter time when i get a late night fire call. Didn't take any pics of the install but it was super easy. Went with the flashpack plug n play and factory remote.

Fold flat floors installed and already being put to use and full of dog hair!

How much did those load flat floors cost you? And where did you find them? I was wanting them on mine but didn't really know where to look for them. Do they just replace the lid that is normally there from the factory in the normal Rams without that option?

I paid $200 for a set of take-offs I found on ebay. It took a while for me to find a set at that price, including looking on different forums. I didnt have the lids but yes they will replace the underseat storage compartment lids. I dont think they started offering the flat floors in the 4G ram until 2013 but they bolt in just fine to my 2010. Be aware of the year and cab configuration that you buy as they were offered in the 3G rams (quad cab) and 4G quad cab and crew cab. The only difference is that the quad cab will be shorter, the ones I bought were out of a 2015 crew cab.
