I ran mine tight, I think I set it at .004 just because I did a lot of low speed rock crawling and wanted to have little to no slop and my pre-load was set tight too. Perfect for low speed high horsepower rock beatings, but it WILL heat up the highway HOT.... For highway use/all around use, I would do what you are doing to keep the heat down. Dep. on what you are doing with the rig... If you break them in correctly, they will be bullet proof.. Run a 80w90 first for about 1000 miles while driving at variable speeds, and stop and let those gears cool down (they will run hot for the first 500 miles) try not to do a highway run to break them in (not good) then at 1000 miles I swapped the fluid to 140weight.

I have to swap my fluid out in both my diffs every 5th trail ride because the oil gets black really fast. A buddy of mine said that because my diffs are set tight for strength, and when you beat on them on the rocks, they heat up fast, and with the friction load and shock loads it burns my fluid really fast.... Maybe I ought to swap to a synthetic oil... But I figure keep with the cheap gear oil because I swap the fluid so often... It has held up for 3 years now, so I figure stick with what I am doing.

Keep up the pics,,, I am interested to see how you set up the Truss on the axle:) Great job....

Gunna be really simple like this just an upper
Tho. I always run full synthetic I think I will do 75w90 for the first 1000 miles like you said and maybe add Lucois oil stabilizer in it also then dump it and run 75 w140 again. Again with stabilizer. I don't mind the gear clap but I do have a feeling a bit looser will be better for
Me. And the way I drive lol thanks for the advice about the highway and varying ranges I will for sure do that.

ya I really want to do the lower but this swap to the 11.5 I'm losing enough ground clearance so
I think I'll be fine with the top I'm pretty sure that falls right on the breather tube line so I may have to bung a new one in.

So much shit to do still jbm. So much shit lol thankfully it looks like I won't have to spend anymore dough as most everything is purchased and waiting maybe a rear driveshaft modification but I'm hoping I can get away with just chopping some splines on the old shaft :/ well see...

lol no I drank beer while a friend did this at his shop! I didn't have the time to leave it on the hoist for the day so I figured just pay him to do it and he's done a bunch of aam rebuilds so fingers crossed it seems much quieter except he said the new had shaft has a weird dead spot in the forward cardan joint. So I'm not sure how to deal with it that must be why it's vibrating at 60+ mph since I installed it. Guess I'm sending it back next week.

I have a dead spot too. 15-20°. Always have
I don't think that's the vibration. More likely vibration in the shaft. Maybe get it balanced locally. Only will charge u 30-40 bucks if it's good. If you're still chasing it down

actually Jess at HAD shafts said he'd pay for shipping back and have a look at it. I ran the truck this morning with hubs locked and front shaft spinning new gears and bearings and no more crazy bad noises from front. But like 80-100km high speed driveline vibe from right under my feet since I put this shaft in. Maybe it's damaged or something or a new Cardon is bad well see I am sending it away hopefully this week is ups come to my shop tomorrow etc

I Deffinatly feel a super weird spot in the forward cardan joint it does have a step to it when rotating and the rear joint ford not have that so either there's a bad spot in the locating ball or something hopefully Jess can figure it out ASAP and get it back to me before my new rear end goes in.

If you're feeling it in your feet it's the Cardon. And it will be bad at exactly those speeds. Been there. There should be no "step" in the joint. I know exactly the feel you are describing. Jack the front and then turn the front driveshaft. Wait you have free Spin. Slowly rotate the shaft from the front joint. Not the shaft itself. Hand on the pinion. Watched the shaft. If you see it "bump" on that spot get it pulled. It will over time damage pinion seal. I could go on bout that front shaft. I'm on my 3rd....but this one is holding good.
