Ya, for a pavement princess!!! ;) I will make it out one of these runs!! Gonna be doin the Transalta road west of water valley in the jeep, end of February, I'll let you guys know how doable it would be for wagon folks, maybe we could make it a trip? It closes end of March every year. Wide open mountain valley, gotta cross the river several times!

What's the deal with the 1st gen wheels? Different offset/backspace?
And the winch mod to make it work with the arb bumper.

Thanks in advance Jeff

Cheap winter wheels! I'll have to measure both sets to see if there's a difference in offset. The winch was easy. Clock the drum, move one of the spreaders. I'm going to pull it out again, and clock it straight up, and notch my cover plate.

"clocking the drum" = rotating it

I get that but why ? something to do with the reverse rotation of our winches vs standard winches ?

The way the winch is set up from factory is a "over the top" pull. To mount it on a winch bumper, you need a bottom pull. As well, from factory, the winch mounts with the feet facing the pull. The ARB bumper requires a feet down mount. To get this, the winch needs to be turned 180*, and then rolled 90* up. This puts the release handle backwards. As well, one of the spreaders needs to be removed, and relocated. In reality, there's no real "reverse" rotation, they just mount the winch ass backwards. Simple to flip it around, clock it, and it works as Warn intended!

Why the hell would Dodge do that (reverse winding winch) ?? I am sure it would be easy to just flip the planetary gears over and see if you could change the internals to make it run the "correct way" Bumper looks great BTW;)

It's not reverse wound, gunny. It's a normal warn winch, just set up reverse, for economy it space. It's slung low, so they needed it to come off the top. So they 180* the winch, and then the cradle mounts it feet forward, instead of feet down. It's set up like an 8274, except rolling off the top. So once I clocked the drum, and moved the spreader bar, it worked like any other warn winch.
I'm definitely happy with the bumper. Saw a couple set up with Iron Cross and the Road Armor bumpers, and they are HUGE. And you give up so much approach angle with them. I'm not real fond of the pouty lower lip look that they have. I've ordered master pull synthetic for the winch, so I'll lose some weight there, and I still have to pull it once more, and clock the handle upright. I'll wait until my synthetic comes in, so I can pull the wire rope out before pulling the winch. That's a heavy bugger to bench press from a crawler! ;)

Thanks for the explanation...although I've owned 5 4x4's I've never owned a winch. Been stuck plenty but always got strapped out by another vehicle

I've always had a winch, since the first time I had to walk all night out of the bush to get my buddies to rescue me!! I tend to be a loner, and get places I shouldn't be by myself, because of the schedule I used to work. So I always carried several hundred extra feet of winch extension, and other recovery gear. Not the smartest, I know, but even for work, I was remote on ice roads in northern Alberta late at night many times, where there's no phone service, and you have a rough sketch of where the work camp is. And there's not much traffic out there!!

Thanks for the explanation. I was scratching my head with that. Yes. a winch is like a big insurance policy. I always tell people when they ask "whats the first thing I should get for my truck, Lift and tires"??? I say "hell no,,,,a winch,,,then get the lift and tires".. :)

Dodge probably had the slot in the bumper as a target for the rollers. A bottom pull would have needed a bumper redesign, which would lead to testing and certification, etc.

Hard to find any good pictures but the 3rd gen winches (like mine) appear to have the motor on the drivers side and are the reverse rotation winches. All the winch pictures I can find of the 4th gen winches show the motor on the pass side but the use the same over the drum wrap style. So a 4th gen winch is probably an off the shelf warn winch that is standard rotation because when you flip them they would become a standard wind under the bottom winch.
The feet however should be mounted forward so they are in "compression" under a hard pull and not under "tension" where the feet are all that is holding the applied load, most 10 K + winches mount foot forward just to take the load off the mounting feet/bolts. May never be a problem could it could make for a heavy projectile if the feet or a mounting bolt ever fail.

Now you've made me wonder!! Yes, the motor was on the passenger side, now on the drivers side. I'm gonna have to go find a 3G!

As for the mounting, if Warn and ARB have confidence in this feet down set up to a 16.5k winch, I'm willing to run it. Ideally, yes, I agree, I'd rather it feet forward, but this is how they've engineered it. All I can say is, if the sum itch ever lets go, I'm gonna be glad to be behind it!! ;)

I have been next to a winch that failed. doing a heavy pull running a snatch block. It was a warn 12k, pulling a truck up the side of a mountain in Tellico (when it was open) the dude was going down a snowy trail and slipped off the trail and down it went. While we were pulling, the winch let go, broke the winch mounting legs, and destroyed the winch, but it never left the plate, Apparently the rope going through the rollers on the winch mounting plate held the winch from leaving the truck. It was a hell of a POP when it came off,,, but it only moved 3", broke the winch in 4 places. I was thankful that the winch plate had the roller fairlead as an integral part of the plate, cause it certainly kept the winch "near" its cradle.

Brown Santa showed up!! :) and, because it came from the great USA, with whom we are supposed to have a free trade agreement, I got bent over for another $136. Hate UPS. Hate em. ;) 7/16", 125', 23,900 rating. And light. I actually pulled my wire ( minds out of the gutter please) out of the winch before I took it out this time, and that flipping wire rope musta weighed 55-60lbs!
