2006 Power Wagon Build

Post by cell4soul » Sun Aug 17, 2014 9:54 am

My starting point:

2006 Power Wagon, white in color, 56K on the odometer (one owner truck from CA), factory rock rails.

Lockers and smart bar are working perfectly, so I plan to read others post to help keep them working that way. I will run a Carli lift, probably the one that comes with the Bilstein 7100's, full set of control arms, the Carli leafs made by Deaver. I will keep the lift as low as possible to allow for 37's without clearance issues. I will use factory wheels, so I will run a narrow 37" tire (37 12.5 r 17); I will likely run BFG's or possibly the Goodyears or Coopers.

These initial mods should empty the wallet for a while. I plan on phase one, the lift to be done in a few weeks. Phase two will be RCV axles and Carli ball joints. I will eventually build a rear bumper with swing out tire carrier. The only one I know of that can be purchased is made by Aluminess. Theirs is a nice product, but too rich for my blood.

I will follow with photos when I have enough posts to do so.
2006 Power Wagon, factory rock rails, Carli 3" with Carli control arms and Deaver rear springs, Bilstein shocks with remote reservoir, 2008.5+ steering upgrade, 37" Cooper STT's on stock wheels, Warn wireless winch controller, Dynatrac ball joints........and more to come as the wallet allows.

Here are some parking lot pics with the Carli lift installed. Just picked it up tonight. The guys at Strapt Performance did a really good job. Good people to work with. Now gotta get it out for a shakedown run.

Tire gate is another option but also not a low cost option.
It will not handle the abuse of those who tend to do the go fast trail running.

We almost have matching trucks ... and we live in the same city! We definitely need to get some wheeling in.

Hey Sheepdog, I think I am going out next Saturday with some of the guys from Strapt if you are interested. Not sure where yet, they were talking about somewhere up near Bartlett Lake. I am new to AZ and still don't know the trails.

Just drove the truck for the first time with the new lift. Mostly street and some very easy trails. The Carli suspension has an amazing ride and I could not be happier. It rides much better than stock. I think upgrading to the 2008.5+ "Y" steering helped a lot. So far, I love the Cooper STT's.

I may just take you up on that offer. I'll PM you in the next couple days so we can hash out the details. Should we open this to the rest of our AZ brothers?

Yes, let's open it up to some of the AZ brothers. I am not sure which trails we will run as I am tagging along with the guys from Strapt Performance. I don't think they have picked a spot yet and I am sure they won't mind some additional trucks. I don't know the trails here yet, but if something falls through with them, we can still run some trails.

Looks like I'm out for Saturday. I was offered overtime on Saturdays from here on out, so I'll be taking advantage of that to fund some more upgrades. Can't pass it up when it's offered.

We'll do it another weekend. I think our plans have fallen through anyways. I am probably working tomorrow as we'll. I am a claims adjuster, so things have been a very busy with all of the storms and flooding.

A couple of recent pics of the Power Wagon. Just a scenic drive up to Apache Lake. The PW is all ready for my hunting trip to Wyoming next week. I leave on the 11th and deer opens the 15th.

We drew region E. I have a friend that lives in Casper and we go from there. Last year I drew 3 deer and 2 antelope......filled all the tags in about 4 days. This year I only drew one deer. My buddy just filled his elk tag yesterday. I took two weeks off of work, so I might see if there are some over the counter tags available. The problem will be getting tags that are in an area that I can actually hunt without landowner permission.

The performance is amazing from a suspension standpoint. I do get some slight rub on the control arms at full lock on the steering, but doesn't bother me. Once you know at what point the tires rub, you can control that. I think the 456 gears will be more than sufficient after I update the shift points for 37" tires. I will say that without retuning the computer, it was a little sluggish at elevation when driving up a grade.

Alright cool good to know thanks for reply! I'm rocking just the stock 33's right now but have been contemplating building the truck very very similar to yours!

Nice build on a nice truck! I still have my 2006 and planning on making similar changes.

I'm curious about braking and the 37" tires. I have Toyo MT 35" tires with EBC slotted & dimpled rotors with Yellow Stuff brakes, and they've improve braking more than what I lost going to 35" tires. Do you still have the stock brakes? If you do, how is braking performance with the 37" tires?

My brakes are still stock. It definitely lost a little stopping power with the 37's. It doesn't bother me though. it just means a little more defensive driving.

Ok, thanks. I'm usually in heavy traffic, and I need the stopping power. That's what always kept me back from going to 37" tires.

Thanks!

Best improve on brakes is to invest in braided lines on all 4 corners. HUGE improvement feel on the pedal and stopping. I am also running the drilled and slotted with hawk pads (good improvement) but the braided lines at all four corners was the best improvement I have felt on my Ram.
