2010 Improvements

Post by Will » Fri Aug 01, 2014 7:00 am

I've been meaning to start an actual build thread, so here's the scoop, I have a 2010 that currently has around 102K miles on the odometer and is a daily driver.

It was still basically stock this past January and then I got the itch. :D

Here are a list of things I've done, they're not extreme, just a few nice little modifications and additions that has rekindled the fire. :D

Warn wireless winch remote
Amsteel synthetic winch rope
Hawk SD brake pads (went through set, now running EBC Yellowstuff)
Kenwood full speaker replacement
Brake and backup lights on switches
myoung smartbar bypass kit
Bedslide 1500 Pro
Century Royal Topper (Removed, connected with cab off road)
Thuren Control Arms
Thuren 3" coils
Thuren Trac Bar
Thuren rear shackles
37x12.5 Hankook Dynapro MT's
El cheapo LED reverse light
Diablo Intune w/Hemifever Tune
Amsoil front and rear differential oil with the GP101 Filtermags
Thuren Custom King 2.5" Stage 3 up front with Boogie Rated Bump Stops, Stage 2 shorties with piggybacks in the rear (replaced Rancho 9000's)
Spicer axle U Joints
Dynatrac HD ball joints

And I just placed an order for a Vararam Air Grabber Intake from Moe's. (* Update, no go on the Vararam)

The pictures will be coming shortly in random order.

I only do what the majority of the 4 voices in my head tell me to. In most cases, I ignore two of them because one doesn't speak English, and I suspect the other is talking to someone else.

Yessir, they slightly rub the front sway bar at full cock and barely touch the control arms, would be plenty of room for 35's. I've had it flexed crossing ditches and other stuff and have not had any contact.

I have to give props to myoung on the bypass kit, my lockers lock up immediately and have not missed a beat since the install.

I'm excited about the intake I just ordered, I've been scared of the location of the factory intake bringing in water for a long time. I'll post up how it goes when I get it in and installed.

You and your damn Thuren Control Arms are going to cost me some money. Thuren Arms will lead to AEV Wheels which will lead to bigger tires (35's for me- I need room for tire chains come winter).

I'm going to make myself wait until the truck gets close to 30,000 miles so I can do the control arms and tires/wheels all at the same time.

Don't do it! It will 100% completely ruin you. It took me awhile to talk me into it for the $$$ but now I think it's worth twice that. I can pull it out and reach anything that's in the truck. All my friends love it too. Even the women, when we go to the beach, I pull up to the spot and just pull the tray out and let everybody start unloading. If I didn't have it, guess who'd be crawling up in there... I keep all my tools up front in a bin and the back open for whatever.

I like the fact that it can be used as a table/work bench/etc. when extended. It seems like just the ticket for overlanding/camping. I could keep the generator right on there, strapped/locked down & just slide it out to use it. Also to mount fridge/freezer, air compressor & tank, spare parts, etc. .

Well, got me intake in today. Wasn't real sure about it. It doesn't match the underside of the hood. Must be geared more towards the 1500's... However, it still is a great improvement over the factory intake and most of all limits the water intake that I've been afraid of. The engine sounds throaty now but low volume. There's noticeably more low end torque. I'm loading a new tune tomorrow. I've got a top speed so far and will see what this does with a new tune soon. Looks like a new spot for a second battery now...:)

Here's some photos.

Sheepdog, this is the Vararam intake for the 4th generations. As you can see, it pulls air from under the front cross beam from high in the grill instead of down low like the 3rd Generation Vararam. On my normal commute this morning, I could really tell the difference in throttle response and low end, much more responsive and can feel some more torque. I know it's designed to help even more once the air pressure increases (ram air effect...) but didnt expect the low end addition :D

The main reason I got it was to get the air intake to a different location. I've had dirt in my factory one indicating some muddy water has made it to the box before. Don't want any hydro-locking going on...

As far as the product itself, it looks to be durable but the only thing that really holds it in place is the hose clamp on the riser tube and the hood when closed, but I guess that's all that's really needed. Also, the seal on it touches my hood but is not in the same shape as the hood, mine has rises in it in certain spots and the seal on the intake is pretty much flat. I plan on asking them about this. I can tell that it really wouldn't matter though, it's still getting cold air from the front and lots of residual air from other places. Kind of wondering why it costs so much for what it is, but if the gains are there, so be it, right?

Now I plan to blank off the old intake hole in the fender area, shelf it and put in a second battery. :)

Oh, and I verified a 125mph run with the Garmin... Ole goat will roll on 37"s... I loaded a new tune this morning and will log it to see if any adjustments are needed.
